Memory Lane Introduction

A bit less than more; a few blocks west between Beedel Avenue and Westcliff Park Drive. It burnt down in 1964. I was living round the corner in Westborough Road in those days and Saturday morning pictures were a regular thing in the days before wall to wall TV. One of us would pay to go in and then open the fire door at the back and let the rest in !

Grr just so I can repeat myself, it was the block that now has the Dulux centre in it.

The Mascot was on the left hand side of the London Road as you drive into Southend, it was IIRC more or less opposite the Classic/Essoldo.
IIRC the Mascot was about 100/150 yards closer to Southend. Used to come up Crowstone Road and turn left on the London Road To get to the Essoldo, which was about 50 yards from the junction.

Yes I used to there some Saturday mornings.

Was old enough to remember the Mascot but not old enough to appreciate its Art Deco architecture. Christ! what a shame, it would have been a listed building today.

Sorry, but I've no idea where the Dulux Centre is and I expect plenty of others haven't either !!!

The Essoldo was also another great looking building, which started out life in 1939 as the Metropole, unfortuately in its later years became a Bingo Hall, and was closed and pulled down in 1991.

This was on the south side of the London Road west of the Mascot, (top of Electric Avenue I think).

I saw the DVD up in HMV does it contain a lot of live footage from Southend area.

More from Canvey (logically enough)but IIRC there's a nice shot of the Esplanade and Southend seafront.Well worth getting.

Indeed. There's some footage from The Kursaal 'Stupidity' gig back in '75 (seen previously on 'Going Back Home') and some great footage of Lee waxing lyrical in the back (piano) bar at The Grand.

Remember the Roy Orbison gig at TOTS well.Think you'll find one of those Lindersfarne gigs(can't remember which one) was switched to the Palace Theatre, where I saw them live with Ritchie C.(I was away at Uni during much of the time period here, otherwise would have seen a lot more). Also saw one or two of the Feelgoods gigs at The Kursaal but again can't remember which).Talking of RC he'll have seen quite a few of the concerts on this list, including the Feelgoods at The Esplanade and a lot of the stuff at The Cricketers and The Queens.

Barna gets it right !!!!!!!!

Another great deco building. I can only remember the steps and the entrance doors but there again, that may have been due to my height at the time.

Re the Kursaal, I believe Dame Helen Mirren worked on a stall as a "blagger-in" and on "Tip the Lady out of the Bed" in the early Sixties, about that
time I worked for the Lecorgne Bros and my sister worked for the Strauss Bros. Happy Days with the Mods and Rockers!
