RIP Maggie Thatcher.

Should there be a day-off work to mark this?

Compare her to the other options at the time, which if I recall correctly were Callaghan, Foot and Kinnock. Were would we be now if one of those clowns had got in?

Now theres a win treble for you, christ it don't bare thinking about steveo.:omg:

I could hear the Champagne corks popping from The Guardians offices from my desk on Fleet Street.

An awful person but celebrating someone's death is never correct.

Famously, when Franco died (in 1975), Barcelona ran out of Cava.I might be tempted to indulge in a glass or two of Juve Camps later tonight.

You'll no doubt remember Stevo that "Sunny Jim" Callaghan took over as Labour PM when Wilson resigned (in office )because of ill health and was defeated by Thatcher in 1979.

Party time!

I didnt like her policies or her actions but She was a Mother and a Grandmother who has a family who is now grieving.
I think her family should be allowed to mourn without the British public descending into a sea of hatred vs sycophantic outpourings

I think a few hundred thousand ex-miners might disagree. State funerals should only be for those who brought the country together (Churchill) or did a lot of charity work in between extensive holidays and dalliances with sports stars (Diana).

I'm guessing you don't actually know that much about the career of Churchill? Unless, of course, you support a politician that sends troops in against striking miners?

and don't get me started on the Gallipoli campaign!

Personally not fan of Mrs T - however gloating on the death of a former of this country is a no-no . Like most PM's she did some good things however she also did some bad things. As I get older I am slowly realising that all politicians are the same to a degree & I fell sympathy for the PM of whatever persuasion because despite the title they don't actually run the country.

With a bit of luck you might choke on it. Remember the Kevin Ayers thread and your request to show some respect? I said then you wouldn't have the decency to show Thatcher the same good grace.

****ing weasle that you are. My contempt for you really does have no bounds.

I'm shocked at the contempt shown on this thread. The country was on its knees when Maggie got to power. She made some awful mistakes for sure over the years but the only PM in my lifetime that I have any admiration for. I'm not getting into a left v right debate but I will say that I'll bet there's far more respect on the red side of the fence for her than will come from the blue side when Blair goes.

RIP Maggie and thanks for putting the Great back in Britain.

...the British public descending into a sea of hatred vs sycophantic outpourings

Both as misguided and ridiculous as each other. As for those suggesting a drink in celebration, it says far more about the weakness in character of the person saying it than it does about Thatcher. Absolutely pathetic, although in some cases, quite predictable and expected.

RIP a great political leader who did many great things for this country but who also made some terrible mistakes - the double edged sword of leadership.

I've been having some fun by email with a few of the BBC executives this afternoon, as one by one their so called comedians/actors step out to slate Thatcher on Twitter; presumably with one eye on their careers. I've suggested that as a 'politically neutral broadcaster,' perhaps they would like to publically distance themselves from the remarks that have been made. I'm eagerly awaiting their replies....

Some touchy people on here. People can think what they like of Thatcher.

I say good riddance to the rancid bitch.
