We are a league two side, they should be able to beat us even with a weakened team. I dont see this being another Millwall who were a shambles, but its a one off game and we are at home.

They should be confident of getting a result but theres no reason we cant hope for an upset.

This.
Without sounding like a cliche , we have no pressure on us.
The country expects the Prem side to win but hopes the L2 minnows cause an upset.

There is always a chance of an upset, but once Hull start pushing it about, the gap in class should be there for all to see. I expect them to win by at least 2 clear goals.

Hull's back-up players include the likes of Stephen Quinn, Sone Aluko, Matty Fryatt and since the additions of Jelavic and Long, Danny Graham. If they take it remotely seriously, they should have no problem rolling us over.

Graham will probably be at Forest before the weekend. Good signing for them if so.

I'd be concerned about George Boyd. Knows what this level is all about and a great player. I'd expect him to start as he's been off the bench alot this season.

Well, as I typed on another article, it is being suggested that they (Hull) will play a 3-5-2 formation.

We might play a 4-3-3 formation (some say a 4-5-1 formation that can look more like a 4-1-4-1 at times).

It might not be easy for either team to work out who they are marking and when and there might be the possibility of putting in runners (a la Wilkinson or Leonard goals) who can use the space(s).

I once remember that a team called Manchester United came to Roots Hall.....:whistling:

Yes but that was Premier League against Championship. One league difference. We're talking 3 leagues difference here. The additional quality and class of the Premier League side SHOULD see them prevail. But if it doesn't....

Thanks for that.
I think we have a 'small' chance , but the likes of Meyler , Koren , Boyd , Fryatt etc are probably a class above most we face weeek in / week out , so no great expectations.
But , we are playing really well , have a great team spirit and as the old saying goes 'have nothing to lose'.
Apart from Saturday , hope you have a good second half of the season.

Yeah likewise i'm sure Brown Phil will do the business this season, i always used to enjoy my trips down to Roots Hall and despite this season being overshadowed for many by this deranged name change proposal there's certainly a buzz about this game especially amongst those of us who knew Hull had a football team before we got into the Premier League. :madman:

No idea how many we've sold but i'm sure those in attendance will help create a great atmosphere.

Really looking forward to it.

I expect Southend to win the FA Cup so if the majority believe Hull are the bigger club then no giantkilling here I am afraid. :winking:

We were seriously batting above our average that season. We were pretty much League 1 and they played in the Champions League.

Don't just leave it like that !
What happened !!!

Ah, there once was a romany Gypsy
The Shrimpers all called him Fred.
And all the Man United,
with players so delighted,
Said "you're going down."
Then - a foul. Free kick. Fred scored a goal.

I'd say the difference between us and Man United at that time was greater than the difference between us and Hull now. We were out of our depth in that division. Man U had Rooney and Ronaldo in their side, on Saturday Hull will probably have Amdy Faye and Matty Fryatt in their team...

I think Brown should at least announce that he is thinking of playing some of the 'fringe' players ( Smith , Auger , Clifford , Payne etc ) as he's resting the first team for League action.

Going on league positions Id say the gulf isnt too much different than against Man Utd. We were a good league one side at the time (despite being in the championship). Now were are a good league two side and Hull are a bottom half Premiership side. Man Utd also played a weakened side, but any team with Ronaldo or Rooney in it was better than what Hull will put out.

I get what you're saying and yes Matty Fryatt is no Wayne Rooney and Amdy Faye is no Gabriel Heinze. But similarly Kevan Hurst isn't as good as Mark Gower was in that season in the Championship and Cauley Woodrow isn't as good as Freddy was in his first spell with us.

What I'm saying is it's all relative. I do agree that the gulf in class between Man Utd "squad" team (top half/ european challenging) side and Championship (upper League One class) Southend was perhaps that of 2 divisions rather than 1 but there will still be quite a difference in ability between Hull's side and ours. And just because their reserves aren't quite the household names as with United they'll still be a bloody good side.

Lets keep our feet on the ground as we're likely to be facing a side which was at least good enough to achieve automatic promotion from the Championship last season so its going to be a tough ask.

What we have in our favour is the likelihood is these players won't have played together as a team much recently whereas our lads play week in, week out. We're also bang on form and full of confidence and if the issues of Hull's defending from crosses are to be believed then that may play into our hands too.

It's gonna be a tough, tough game but I wouldn't be going if I didn't think we had a least a chance.

Don't give up your day job! Nevertheless it was a fantastic night, just can't see lightening striking twice.

I think JCR finished Heinze's Man U career that night, would be nice if Straker can step up in the same way

So, for argument's sake let's say the gap in quality between the Southend of then and Man U is about the same as the gap between the Southend of now and Hull. I think we all agree the win over Man U was a once in a lifetime fluke. So you would have to say the odds of us winning are pretty slim.

However, to quote Dumb and Dumber:

Lloyd: What do you think the chances are of a guy like you and a girl like me... ending up together?
Mary: Well, Lloyd, that's difficult to say. I mean, we don't really...
Lloyd: Hit me with it! Just give it to me straight! I came a long way just to see you, Mary. The least you can do is level with me. What are my chances?
Mary: Not good.
Lloyd: You mean, not good like one out of a hundred?
Mary: I'd say more like one out of a million.
Lloyd: So you're telling me there's a chance... *YEAH!*
