Tax-credits-the new poll tax for the Tories?

The whole thing was handed incredibly poorly. You'd think that a Government with such a tiny majority would manage their messages a bit better.

It's about time The Tories (and you Kippers) took on board what John McDonnell said ie you can't keep blaming the previous Labour government for ever.

It was Boy George who promised to wipe out the deficit in one parliamentary term. Not Gordon Brown or even Alistair Darling.

Something that doesn't affect me yet...fortunately.

It's difficult at present to foresee a future labour government , so if it's all the same to you I will remember the last one.

John McDonnell might go down well in China though !

I'm starting to feel sorry for the Labour Party. The shadow Chancellor made a complete idiot of himself rather than doing his job of responding to the budget. Quoting from a book written by a man reponsible for the deaths of 45 million people should haunt him for the rest of his days. That one act will grab the headlines rather than a barnstorming response. Is it any wonder that the vast majority of the PLP looked like they wanted to curl up and die from embarrisment.

This goverment will never be held to account until the PLP get a grip of this farce and become a proper opposition rather than an annoying fringe group.

The state of affairs is very, very poor with no effective opposition at all; except, maybe, the SNP who ought to be the formal opposition as they are a united party and support their leader; Labour are letting down/failing the nation and might just be the worse opposition in living memory for inept nothingness.

I genuinely wanted the Labour Party and Corbyn to offer an alternative and effective opposition....what I have seen so far is amateurish at best.
The shadow chancellors response to Osbornes spending review was completely ineffective as GHG states, quoting Mao and then throwing the red book across to Osborne was childish at best.
So much for jez he can.

You seem to be conveniently forgetting that Comrade George and Comrade Dave have already cut a deal with their counterparts in communist China, which was of course, entirely the point of John Mcdonnell's rather droll Little Red Book joke.

A poor joke at best....and nothing to do with the spending review which was what he was supposed to be responding to as opposition chancellor.

Even the most ardent Labour supporter should be disappointed.

I woudn't rush to judgement just yet guys.

Think you'll have to wait for the Oldham by-election result and next year's elections in May before coming to a considered decision on this.

MG-I have to admit that I was impressed by the SNP's questions at PMQ's today.Pity they've got so few MP's.

It's almost impossible for a Shadow Chancellor to comment spontaneously on a set of figures which he hasn't seen in advance. You'll recall that EB made a rights balls up in the last budget before May's election.

He makes a solid attack on Boy George's "economic illiteracy" here:-

http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-34924814

JM also made a spirited attack on the Tories economic policies in his pre-autumn statement press release yesterday.

HMO are just getting started. There's 4 and a half years to go.

(I note that even UKIP have attacked the Chancellor for abandoning austerity policies).

When I think of politicians making jokes none stick in my mind other than the fails - so I remember Cameron's S&M joke where he said M&S and I draw a blank after that. So the Mao gag was always likely to fall flat despite a good point being made - that this Government are against nationalisation unless it's other countries' governments nationalising our industries. Very odd.

As Barna says - the opposition have to react to information they have just been given - by a shouty man with a few hundred people braying over the top of him.

The Mao thing was a bit like a best man speach cribbed off the internet but McDonnell was succinct about the budget headline - it's with thanks to the Labour Party and the House of Lords that the tax credits changes are off the table for now. It's a bit telling when the main announcement in a budget is the Chancellor saying he was reversing his own ill thought out policy of which he was one of only a handful of people not to think it wrong all along.

Effectively the budget headline 'I would like to proudly announce that I have decided to shelve my own disasterous policy'. Go George, I wish my job was that easily sated.

I watched one of labour's staunchest supporters this morning,he admitted the party are frankly pathetic and the red book joke was a major fail.

Watching Jezza and Jonny they look as though they want to scream "one out all out brothers".

Sorry *** but your mob have really achieved something I thought was impossible, they have become even worse than before.

Fortunately a lot of people think the opposite and Labour are where they should be - not a thinly diluted version of the Tory Party.

The membership think they are doing great which is such a tiny percentage of the population, they are doomed MK,you know it,everyone know's it.

Maybe, maybe not. There's a huge groundswell of disaffected people latching onto a new left wing Labour. Membership is flourishing.

Perhaps people have had enough of austerity being piled on them time and again when the Tories and their rich friends live the high life.
