Leyton Orient

Interim Head Coach Ross Embleton provided an injury update for current absentees Jamie Turley, James Dayton and Jobi McAnuff following the draw with Salford City on Saturday.

Ross Embleton.jpg
Interim Head Coach Ross Embleton

After being asked whether Tuesday is too early for Jamie Turley to see action, Ross Embleton said, “I think so. I am hoping Jamie will train with the team fully on Monday or later in the week. The target is him to train on Monday. He’s looking stronger so I think the next step for Jamie is to step into the group and see the knocks and bumps, twists and turns and see how the groin holds up to that. Fingers crossed he’ll train on Monday and we’ll see where he is after that but it’s far too early in terms of him being involved.”

Embleton continued by expanding on other absentees, “James Dayton is looking good. The conversation we had before we left was that he had run his most amount of distance in training the other day, which was with some twists and turns – all unopposed but it’s nice to see him moving. I think it’s going to be a process of firstly getting James strong enough to run comfortably and then to drip him into training. It’s going to be a little bit longer than we would have liked but he suffered a horrendous injury”

Jobi McAnuff is good. He’s not quite training with the group yet but despite going under the knife, we knew it was quite a quick turnaround. He’s covering some really distances at a really good intensity, albeit on his own in terms of the running at the moment. We’re hopeful it is going to be in the next couple of weeks in terms of being closer to the group. How soon that is, it’s a bit like Jamie, it is too soon to tell.”

Chris Phillips of the ECHO talks to Leyton Orient supporter ahead of tonight’s game

Echosport talks to Leyton Orient fan Aaron Patel ahead of tonight’s game in the Leasing.com Trophy at Brisbane Road.

After last season’s promotion, what have you made of Orient’s start to life in League Two?

“So far, it’s been a decent start.

“Of course, being back in the EFL was going to provide its challenges.

“But I think we’ve started OK.

“August wasn’t a bad month and hopefully we’ll kick on.”

Orient are currently 15th in the League Two standings with eight points from the first six games. What are the hopes for the O’s this season?

“I hope Orient can stay in the EFL.

“It’s very important we maintain our EFL status. Also, a nice FA Cup run wouldn’t be so bad.”

How seriously do you think Orient will be taking the Leasing.com Trophy and does it mean that much to the fans?

“While it may not be the pinnacle of cup competitions in football, any silverware is nice.

“I think it’s also a chance to give youth academy players some minutes, which I think is absolutely important.”

Who would you say is the Orient dangerman Southend need to be keeping an eye out for?

“James Brophy is always a handful.

“He’s always looking to get forward and beat his man so he would be the main one in my opinion.”

What’s the team news for tonight’s game. Do you expect there to be many changes?

“Jamie Turley is still out from what I understand, which is a shame. Jobi McAnuff is a long way from making a full recovery too but hopefully we’ll see some rotation against Southend.”

Southend United

No Kevin Bond? So Gary Waddock talks to the Southend United OS before travelling to Leyton Orient

Gary Waddock.jpg
Assistant Manager: Gary Waddock

Gary Waddock previews Blues' Leasing.com Trophy opening Group C clash against Leyton Orient.

On the change of competition…

We want to go there and obviously put on a good performance and we’re looking to win the game, we need to start doing that and building some confidence so will be going into that game in the right frame of mind.

On if it will be a stronger side out as the Portsmouth game has now been postponed…

It would probably have been a strong side anyway but with the game off on Saturday it opens it up for everybody really. I’m sure there’ll be some fresh legs in there as well because we need to have high energy in the team especially with a lot of games we’ve had in the last few weeks. We want to approach it with a lot of energy.

On Charlie Kelman and Mark Milligan going off on international duties…

It’s great for both of the players to be called up by their countries and we wish them good luck. We can’t select them but it’s a great opportunity for both players and it’s great recognition for them two players and the football club. It gives an opportunity to other players who have been possibly on the fringes and obviously with the results that we’ve had all the places are up for grabs, so if you get that shirt tomorrow evening and you put in a performance then it puts you in a good position for the league campaign.

On this being a meeting on the backdrop of the tragic passing of Justin Edinburgh in the summer…

It was dreadful news, when it happened my thoughts were with Justin and his family. The job that he did for the football club and to get them back in the League was fantastic. Everybody in the footballing world was deeply saddened to hear the dreadful news but they are a good club they’ve had some real hard times, but Justin got them going again. All credit to him and his staff they’ve kept on the good work for him.

On Leyton Orient’s start to the season…

They’ve done very well, Justin’s put everything in place and obviously Ross has come in and taken the reigns. He’s been influenced by Justin and what Justin’s done, credit to him because it’s a very difficult situation he took over and his staff have done a fantastic job to get to where they are. It’s going to be a tough game for us, it’s also going to be one that we’re looking forward to.

On Sam Mantom’s availability for tomorrow…

We’ve got a few bumps and bruises as well as a few injuries, we will give the lads every opportunity and wait until the last minute to see whose fit and available but we’re going to go there with a group of players who are determined to get a result.

Chris Phillips at the ECHO talks to Assistant Manager Gary Waddock ahead of the game against Leyton Orient

Liam Ridgewell.jpg
Pushing for a place - Southend United defender Liam Ridgewell

Southend United’s assistant manager Gary Waddock has challenged those involved at Leyton Orient tonight to show they should feature regularly.

Blues, who have lost all six of their League One matches this season, head to Brisbane Road for the opening group game of the Leasing.com Trophy.

And Waddock wants a strong showing from the Shrimpers.

“There will possibly be chances to players who have been on the fringes and with the results we’ve had all of the places are up for grabs,” said Waddock.

“So if you get the shirt tonight and put in a good performance then it puts you in a good position for the League campaign.”

Liam Ridgewell, Rob Kiernan and Richard Taylor are among those pushing to be involved.

Chris Phillips at the ECHO talks to Richard Taylor who is pushing for his debut against Leyton Orient

220052928.jpg.gallery.jpg
Richard Taylor pushing for debut

Southend United youngster Richard Taylor hopes to be handed a chance to impress at Leyton Orient tonight.

The 18-year-old centre-back signed for the Shrimpers in the summer after being released by Burnley.

And Taylor - who has been in and among the first team squad since signing - is keen to be given his debut this evening in the Leasing.com Trophy.

“It really would mean the world to me to play against Leyton Orient and make my debut,” said the defender.

“I’ve learnt so much since coming to Southend and it’s been great being around the first team but obviously I would love to play.

“I want to be able to show the fans and everyone else what I can do and to try and show I should play more.”

Blues have struggled defensively so far this season and have still not kept a clean sheet since January.

But Taylor does not feel a lack of effort is to blame.

“All of the lads work so hard but, unfortunately, it just hasn’t gone our way so far this season,” said the centre-back.

“Hopefully that can change though and a win tonight can be the start of that.”

Taylor is among those pushing for a place tonight along with Liam Ridgewell, Rob Kiernan, Andre Blackman, Layton Ndukwu and Isaac Hutchinson.

And Taylor could line-up in defence just a year after switching positions.

“I used to play as a striker so centre-back is a fairly new position for me but I’m learning all the time,” said the defender.

“I also played in midfield for Burnley’s under-23s so I can play in a few roles but it’s been going well since I’ve been at the back and I’m enjoying it.”

Taylor will be bidding to show off his skills.

And he is determined to impress after being let go by Burnley.

“It was a really tough time for me and my family,” said Taylor.

“You don’t know what’s going to happen but it did come as a shock.

“There had been a report saying I was destined for greatness and then I was leaving.

“But it gives you extra fire to do well really and I have another chance at Southend, which I’m grateful for, so hopefully I can prove Burnley wrong.”

Blues will be without midfielder Mark Milligan and striker Charlie Kelman tonight as the duo are both away on international duty.

Defender John White is set to miss out with an ankle problem while midfielder Sam Mantom faces a late check on a hamstring injury.

The Big Preview

Leyton Orient vs Southend United
Big Preview.jpg
Overview

Blues turn their attentions to the Leasing.com Trophy this evening as Kevin Bond's side travel to The Breyer Group Stadium to take on Leyton Orient.

Southend reached round three of the competition last term before being knocked out by the eventual winners Portsmouth at Roots Hall.

Orient were last in the competition back in the 2016/17 season where they fell at the first hurdle, finishing bottom of a group which included Stevenage, Brighton and Southend.

Form

Southend’s league troubles have been well documented in recent weeks, with Blues still to pick up a league point from their six games so far this season.

Kevin Bond’s only win of the campaign so far came in the first round of the Carabao Cup against Stevenage last month where Blues won 2-1.

Leyton Orient have settled back into life in the Football League with two wins, two draws and two defeats from their six games, drawing 1-1 on the road at Salford City on Saturday.

Last Meeting

Tuesday 4th October 2016

Southend United 1-0 Leyton Orient

Fortune 82’

Marc-Antoine Fortune’s late goal was all that separated the two sides at Roots Hall as Blues ran out 1-0 winners against Leyton Orient in the Football League Trophy.

The Frenchman turned to fire home with an impressive left-footed effort with just over eight minutes remaining, ensuring Southend’s passage into the next round.

Blues Team News

Assistant manager Gary Waddock suggested Blues would be playing as strong a side possible, especially now the league game against Portsmouth this weekend has been postponed. Waddock to report some 'bumps and bruises' for the management team to factor in, though, when selecting the side this evening.

Two players who will be missing however will be Mark Milligan and Charlie Kelman after both received call-ups by the Australian national team and U.S. under 20 side respectively.

Blues are still waiting to hear the extent of John White’s injury after he was forced off during the defeat to Rochdale which means he almost certainly will not be featuring tonight.

Orient Danger Man

Josh Wright is someone that Southend fans will remember from his time at the club, having spent a season with Blues in 2017/18 following his departure from Gillingham.

Wright made the switch from Bradford City to Orient in the summer and was the last player signed by the late Justin Edinburgh, and he’s gotten off to a good start to life at The Breyer Group Stadium.

The 29-year-old scored the winner in Orient’s opening day victory against Cheltenham before following it up with a second of the season in a losing effort at home to Crawley.

Ref Watch

The referee this evening at The Breyer Group Stadium will be Christopher Pollard who will be assisted by Bhupinder Gill and Daniel Cook, with Kevin Howick the fourth official.

Pollard has taken charge of three League Two games so far this season, issuing nine yellow cards as well as one red, with the red being shown on Pollard’s opening assignment at Mansfield.

This is Pollard’s first season in the Football League so he’s never taken charge of Southend before, most recently refereeing Leyton Orient in their 3-2 win over Eastleigh in March.

Away Fans Guide

The Southend fans that are making the relatively short journey into East London this evening will find themselves housed in the East Stand at The Breyer Group Stadium.

Typically an allocation of around 1,000 is given to visiting supporters with the stadium, traditionally known as Brisbane Road, having a capacity of just over 9,000.

To be honest this is one time when I’d take a heavy defeat. Anything to help along the managerial changes we need. There’s still time to possibly scrape through to the next round in later matches if we really want to. Can’t believe I’m typing this!
