Nathan Bishop?

Gaz_BWFC

Schoolboy
Hi guys, not been on here for a while, sorry to see you at the bottom of the League, hopefully you can turn things around as you're not too far from safety.

Anyway, just wondered what any of you guys thought of the the young Man Utd keeper Nathan Bishop? We're supposed to ne signing him on loan.

Cheers!

Top lad.
Very professional, first into training and last to leave.
Athletic, fast reflexes, needs to work on high ball work.

I would love to say couldn't catch a cold, put his head in his hands and dropped it etc,but i can't.
He won't let you down! Lovely lad and always learning(great coaching by us :Winking: )
His debut at Roots Hall, I'll be honest i've never seen such a confident youngster!
Seeing him training alongside De Hea with a big smile is brilliant!
If you get the chance check out Essex charity cup on Youtube with Sam Hart where Sam explains his dedication! (check out the rest while your there and see the excellent work of fellow shrimper Rylee Doe)
With rumours of Henderson somewhat of a surprise! wish you well.

As MG says a consummate professional, very hard working. Good with his hands, IMO sometimes a touch heavy on his feet but obviously more than good enough for League 2, surprised they didn't try to place him in L1.

Hard working (which is likely why United signed him) but had a horrible habit of conceding at his near post which cost us a lot of goals (he didn't get too much criticism for it since he was still miles better than the back line), that was almost a year ago though so I imagine the coaches United have at their disposal will have been working on that with him.

Likeable. Professional with a decent shot stop. Not sure he was a top pro but certainly good enough for the bottom two divisions.

Really liked him and thought he looked better in his early games than Dan Bentley did early on. Think with the coaching and being surrounded by world class keepers he will excel. Think this will be a good move for him and you look at young keepers in the past who have been at top clubs.

Joe Hart, Jordan Pickford, Nick Pope, Dean Henderson have all excelled after several loan spells whilst being at a top club.

I really hope it works out for Bishop as others have said a likeable guy and a model professional. He was thrown in at a terrible time at the club and was a shining light in a shower of ****!

He was a reasonable backup, but not good enough to force his way past an out of sorts oxley. He was also very young and I’m sure with his attitude will have developed.

Thats more like it, average keeper, fair few flaws hence he lost his chance at no.1 to a very average seasoned pro that was woefully out of form.....League 2 at best!

A very talented young keeper who won’t even peak for maybe another 8-10 seasons who has the most important ingredient to make a pro career of them all....a great attitude.

Unfortunately a small section of the Southend fans blamed the 18 year old kid for being the last line of possibly one of the worst defences in their history and people who’d never kept goal before at any level in their lives decided the 18 year olds positioning was off and his technical ability was in question.

I think you’ll be impressed with him

Don't think I'd know a good goalkeeper anymore. They all look average to me. Not assertive enough, rooted to the line, punching and parrying towards attackers rather than catching. It must be the way they are coached and guess its to do with the ball. It remains, along with 11 players back for a corner, a mystery of the modern game. Flahaven in the league 1 promotion year is the best at Roots Hall in recent times and he wouldn't get a game anymore because he wasn't 8 foot tall.

Being rooted to your line is just because you aren't good but there's a reason punching crosses has become more prevalent than catching. If you attempt a catch and **** it up (which is easy to do with how much swerve balls have these days) then you're going to drop it about a yard from where you're standing because you were trying to stop the ball, not help it on its way, so if it falls to the opposition you've conceded a goal. On the other hand if you punch then even if you don't hit it exactly where you were intending to as long as you've got something on it then the force you generated from the punch is going to make sure it goes well away from you, sure it might fall to the opposition again but there's no immediate threat of a goal.

Also sometimes it isn't possible to reach the ball with both arms, try putting one arm above your head and then putting your other arm up with it in a catching position, unless the ball is directly above your head you have to lower the first arm significantly to make a catch, which reduces your reach.

Depends if you’ve got good handling, nothing sticks to the Ox. Best handling I ever see was Flavs....obvious limitations height wise but spoke to Jim Stannard who trained him and Speroni for Palace and he said he had the hands of a Premiership keeper but obviously not big enough.

I think he's another player who's being remembered as being better than he was, he has real potential and works hard but I'm not convinced he's got what it takes to be a first choice anywhere

Bruce Grobbelaar wasn’t overly big, dominated the area, caught at every opportunity and regularly dropped at the feet of opponents to concede soft goals and look a muppet. He also won 6 champions medals, 3 fa cup winners medals, 3 league cup winners medals and a champions league winners medal. Taking the risk of dropping a ricket was considered by the dominant team of the era a risk worth taking for the goals that were otherwise saved. Goalkeepers are too risk averse probably because of the lashing they’d get on social media and multiple reruns on video.
