Be A Sustainable Fan

With the climate summit going on in Glasgow this week there is naturally a lot of advice flying around how we can do our bit to save the planet. Today I see there are guidelines for football fans ;

Travel - Either walk or get the train to games (tick, I do both) - DO NOT FLY (which reminds me, has anyone see our Dutch fan club recently?)
Refreshments - Avoid Beef or chocolate (are our burgers actually made of beef though?). Delighted to see that beer is 'low impact'.
Tickets - Go paperless, the best method here is a digital ticket. Southend United are leading the way here by making it difficult to obtain ANY kind of ticket.
New Kit - Do not buy one, simple (fashion accounts for 10% of Greenhouse gas emissions from human activity). Or we could go down the same route as Whitehawk and make shirts from recycled plastic bottles.

Are you doing your bit Zoners?

Can the world leaders actually lead on this instead of taking private jets to summits on climate change?.
Maybe then the peasants will do their bit.

The shirts from recycled plastic bottles is a good idea.

I buy some running gear from a company called Zouma, who do exactly that. More and more companies are going down that route. Nike have released a running shoe made from recycled materials, so it’s definitely an option.

That would all come down to Macron though, and whether that’s something they are able to facilitate.

Paperless tickets is a no brainer though.

E-Tickets are so much easier and could probably cut out 80% of complaints to the ticket office as you'll no longer get, "I ordered mine in the post and they didn't arrive", etc.

Unlike the concrete boots some players are wearing

A suggestion regarding making our club greener was put forward some time ago, at the start of the season.
Simple measures such as using recyclable materials in catering and sales areas and having proper bins (collection) for the same.
Local produce for catering, beers.

I would be very pleased to know that FF will incorporate modern green energy sources and materials, plus some cycle racks (not sure on the council's suggestion of pumps?).

A cycle rack is on the agenda, it's something the Trust have asked for and we have been told recently that a grant is being accessed to pay for it.

Unfortunately, our tie in with certain breweries prevents us from having local ales - although I am pretty sure we have had Crouch Vale Brewers Gold as a guest ale in the past.

I would prefer a bit of cynical greenwashing from the club rather than going full Forest Green.

If we don't get out this league soon it doesn't really matter what happens to the planet.

Problem is, install a bike rack, great. But we all know, the scum of Southend will just try and nick them. No good having cctv as it pretty much means nothing and the police won't have the resource to do anything even if they know the person who stole it.

If we are to believe Sir David, Greta and newly converted BJ the word is on the precipice of a disaster which will kill millions and blight the lives of 100’s of millions. Yet yesterday I watched a video of Olympic athletes demanding that world leaders do something, presumably so that they can continue to fly round the world to achieve their personal ambitions.

So why do we continue to endorse international sport? Surely international competition must end, whether that’s football, cricket, f1, whatever.

Or perhaps you, unlike Greta, do not believe we are living in Hell right now and find joy and inspiration in international sport.

If you do buy into Greta and Sir David then perhaps the time for games is over.

1. Travel. I live at least 3 train journeys away from Roots Hall. I've looked into this. It would take me about 3 hours to get there an back (car takes about 70 minutes). It would also be impractical to to visit my parents who live in Shoeburyness. Unless I was very lucky I wouldn't get home from a mid-week game until about 3 in the morning either, and Saturday nights would never happen as I wouldn't get home until about 8.00-8.30. My wife wouldn't be particularly happy with that.

2. Refreshments. I take my own. I wouldn't trust the club's offering and I'm not prepared to pay their prices.

3. Tickets. I'm a season ticket holder, so I guess I meet this one.

4. I haven't bought myself a shirt this year because they didn't have my size. I may well not bother now...

I bet the environmental impact of sport is tiny compared to international travel for business or leisure.

Hopefully 2020 and 2021 will have shown that international travel for business can be permanently reduced at little or no negative impact for the business. Be interesting to see how quick travel budgets expand in 2022

i am not sure building a new generation of (electric) cars makes sense ..

smells like a reason to keep BMW. GM and VW in work ripping up the planet when we actually have more than enough vehicles to go around.. just need to use them less

We can surely utilise the hot air emanating from Ron Martin to heat the players water

Joking aside, when the new stadium is built I would like to think that since they're starting from scratch they could make the stadium as sustainable as possible. There are so many things they could do. The obvious 2 are solar panels on the stadium roof and a water harvesting system. The marginal cost must be pretty small and the benefit would be pretty large.

Maybe a short flush long flush option on the toilets would be so much better then the no flush in the West stand.

There must be a few green incentives they can cash in from the govt as well.
