Post-Match Thread and Ratings Chesterfield 2-2 Southend United

Great point on the road against a team in the hunt for automatic promotion. Fully deserved it too, and on another day could have taken all 3 points. So much character in this team, coming from behind twice, never know when they're beaten. Will Atkinson was incredible, he was everywhere, 100% my MOTM. Support as brilliant as always. 800 fans to Chesterfield is incredible support. The only thing I didn't like yesterday, Matt Dennis really wasn't happy that he wasn't taking the penalty. Tried to get the ball from Dalby. Don't know if anyone else saw it. Then he didn't celebrate with the players when Dalby scored, just walked back to the centre circle. All a bit silly really. I'm sure Kev will sort that out.

Yea I see that, looks to me that Dalby was down for taking the pen and Dennis couldn't accept it until another player i think Ralph told him no its Dalby.
Good to see in a way the hunger to score a goal.

Dennis suffered an ankle injury early on and should probably have been replaced by Powell straight away. He left the ground on crutches according to an earlier post so may have aggravated the damage by staying on.
He was off the pace prior to that injury and if that bad either he should have been taken off or take himself off

What a great advert for the National League. With Chesterfield playing their 5th consecutive home game in 15 days, they and their pitch were jaded. Made for a great leveller and we just do not know when we are beaten now, what a trait to have. We fully deserved the point and what a difference in the away end to that cup game not so long ago. If we can sneak a play off place, no need now to fear inevitable away games at places like this and Bromley.

Arnold 7
Hobson 7
Lopata 7
Kensdale 7
Davies 7
Atkinson 8 MOTM
Neal 8
Husin 7
Ralph 8
Dalby 8
Dennis 6

Powell 7
Bridge 7

Harrison Neal had a great game, so much more disciplined now and seems to have cut out the customary booking. But you just cannot give the MOTM to anyone else but Will Atkinson, who was everywhere, tricks and flicks and so wish he was 10 years younger. With 3 home games on the spin, would on current form expect to remain unbeaten, but need to pick up a couple of wins if play-offs to remain a hope. UTB

Great point against one of the top teams. We were on top for long periods of the game and missed several chances to win it.

Over the 90mins IMO we were by far the better team.

The run goes on. 12 unbeaten now.

Grimsby Tuesday night next,

Fantastic support again from the 800 travelling Blues fans.

Over to you guys,
That was a proper old fashioned football match which I am certain that everybody enjoyed. I would like to mark every player with an eight(8) which includes the coaching staff as well. Men of the Match from me has to go to the 803? Southend United Supporters yesterday with their almost non-stop singing and banging of the drum for well over 150 minutes. Being there was just a "Truly Amazing Experience" and will live long in the memory.

Statistically speaking if any game is drawn it's 2 points lost. Therefore, 3 draws on the bounce is 6 points lost? I think this is the maths Snowy is pointing out. (pun also intended)
I understand that. My argument is that Snowy claimed we have dropped 6 points. Me being an optomistic person consider it, 3 points and a continuation of our unbeaten streak, a gain.

Having just watched 11 mins of the highlights on YouTube I feel like I have been through the ups and downs all over again. Once he came on, Quigley caused us real problems. Could have had a hat trick but for a sharp Super Steve save and heading two over when well placed. And I had forgotten the shot which cannoned off the crossbar. Yep, we rode our luck. Time it did roll for us after the last few years. On to the Mariners now and 3 consecutive home games. COYB

Dont like to moan but i think both their goals could have been avoided. The first goal yes was a fantastic strike but we didnt close him down he had enough time to pick his spot, second goal the guy got in between us. Know doubt Kev and the coaching staff will make the players aware of this .However taking a point after being behind on two occassions speaks highly on how the new coaching team is performing.

Glen Pennyfather had spotted the space King was getting 5 minutes before the goal because Ralph and Davies were getting pushed back a long way…

The second goal in particular was poor defending, two of their players unmarked and free at the near post in front of our first defender. I am sure that will be picked up on the review of the match by the coaching team.

The Soli Moors goal was also weak to concede. I am guessing but it could be that 3 centre backs can be supportive, but also can be unsure of who, what, where etc is plicking up players and moves?

Interesting comments made about Quigley. Everything I have read from a Chesterfield point of view is that he was useless

We controlled much of the 2nd half, but the subs they made resulted in a small tactical change as well. Almost straight away they began to use the whole width of the pitch. We struggled to deal with that initially, but in that time they scored.

I had been looking forward to the game, firstly because I don't go to many away matches but secondly I knew this would give a measure of just how much we have improved. The answer is clear we are now a very useful side. Still a way to go, but every confidence that we will start next season on the front foot for a change.

From The Derbyshire Times.....

FAIR RESULT
Southend deserve a lot of credit because they were much-improved from the two previous fixtures between the two sides this season when Chesterfield won both. The Shrimpers went into this encounter 12 matches unbeaten and you could see why. They were physical, hard-working and carried a goal threat. They have probably left it too late for a play-off finish but it bodes well for them next season. Had they come away with nothing it would have been very harsh.
