We have come out very much second best in matches against Wrexham over the years. We have just 10 wins from 40 League matches, with 13 draws, and we have not beaten them since early 1990 when goals from David Crown and Jason Cook gave us a 2-1 victory. It started okay with Wrexham failing to win in any of their first 8 appearances at Roots Hall, but personal memories of matches against Wrexham are more bad than good, the nadir being watching Ray Smith score a hat-trick against us there on a Monday night in 1967. Better memories from the following free-scoring season when Best(2) and Moore helped us to a point. Last season’s draw was a decent match too.

That last home match was refereed pretty well and once again we have a referee appointed to the same fixture that he did last year. Whether this will change, as Tuesday’s did, I don’t know yet.

Man in charge is currently Alan J Dale from Ipswich, now in his sixth season as a National League referee. He makes his 11th appearance at Roots Hall but the first 9 were all as an Assistant or, more often, as Fourth Official.

Changed again .... see below

Last season’s Wrexham match saw just two yellows to them and other than that his only previous Wrexham match was four years ago when he sent off their much-travelled Luke Summerfield in a 3-0 defeat at Sutton United.

In his early thirties, he works for Suffolk County FA as their Senior Referee Development Officer. Prior to that he worked for Suffolk County Council and before that Ipswich Town Community Trust in various sport related roles.

He has refereed 75 matches at this level with a total of 232 yellows and 16 reds and, despite his very average card count, the only cardless match amongst them was Dover/Barrow three years ago.

He finished his season very early last year at the end of September and started late this season, so he has only done 4 National League matches in the last 12 months, presumably through injury.

Assistants are Peter Wilson from Chelmsford and Charles Martland from Swiss Cottage, a history teacher at Highgate School. It is to be hoped Mr Wilson manages the flag rather better than his efforts with the numbers board against Boreham Wood. Fourth Official is Richard Carter who is from Loughton, as was Tuesday night’s Fourth Official.

Another late change - no Alan Dale.

Instead it's Aaron Bannister from Featherstone, refereeing his fourth ever National League match in this, his first, season.

A Featherstone Rovers season ticket holder, he is the Sheffield and Hallamshire FC Referees Football Development Manager.

As well as those previous three matches (14 yellows, 1 red) he refereed the last 79 minutes of the FA Trophy semi-final last season replacing the injured original official. That was between Wrexham and Stockport.

Serious question Mick, why on earth do they name the officials so early when they seem to be changed every week?

Collin’s goal kicks being retaken twice was comical. Truly awful ref who missed or turned a blind eye to Wrexham‘s shirt pulling!

Absolute prat. Overawed by the occasion I felt. Wanted his presence to be felt and no doubt he enjoyed disallowing our goal.

I think a lot of people overreacting. A good performance under pressure from the referee and his assistants. The goal was right to be chalked off and that was the only controversial decision they made. The abuse the referee got was nothing short of embarrassing from our so called “fans”

I wasn’t there today. And it has been common this season for the assistants not to flag until the period of play has finished.

But I really fail to see how you can give an offside decision where at no point you have raised your flag. If that’s what’s happened.

Awful, made some odd decisions (like Mooney’s booking), missed loads and got bullied by Wrexham players. Not helped by crap linos

You either weren't there, or you are visually impaired.

On balance, much as the retakes were annoying, Collin had been doing it all through the first half. First half lino was already already running up the field. Second half lino was more interested. Didn't surprise us one bit when Collin was finally called on it.

Don't get why he does it. Does the extra inch or two make a difference?*

(*Don't do it, folks!)
