Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-0 Wrexham

Apparently this was offside
He stepped back in from an offside position, which a picture will not show. It was marginal but if the lino pulled his head out his **** then he would have spotted it and flagged it, no controversy then. Poor officiating isn't strong enough to describe it.

Even if the "officials" weren't bedazzled by the Wrexham millions what happened today makes them look inept at best and corrupt at worst. I hope that they get suitable feedback from their hierarchy and give us at least an apology for robbing us of 2 points, it would be the only thing they give us all day!

Just a great game of football! Maher’s brand of attacking football is so exciting to watch at times. Once we develop an end product we will climb the table.

Outstanding performances from Lopata, Hobson, Noor and Mooney. Lopata for me shading the MOM for shackling a very dangerous forward line, ably assisted by Hobbo.

Rest of team also played well. No passengers today.

Well played boys and great work from Maher changing it up.

Agreed it was marginal and in hindsight probably the correct decision but why he never flagged is the baffling part and they got a player booked for shouting at him

But then bizarrely they decide to change their mind , the ref was weak

The decision should have stood, even if incorrect. Too much time had passed.

The referee and his team have to own their dreadful performance, not bail themselves out at the expense of an otherwise hard-earned three points.

Overall disappointing not to come away with the 3 points against arguably the best team in the league (certainly the most money).

For me the Hyde and Dackers partnership was a very good move for the management team today to go with physicality.

The game was bossed by our 3 in the middle today that’s where the difference was, Noor, Cav and Mooney were class today.

The back 3 were very composed and ushered the leagues most potent strike force impeccably.

Colin - 7 quick off his line and very brave at the feet of an attacker.

GSM - 7 not too attacking today but defended very well against a threatening LWB.

Hobson - 7 was good again today looked very assured next to Lopata.

Lopata - 8 this guy gets his head on everything ! There was one stage he was caught up field and sprinting back to goal and won the header either the back of his head. Excellent performance

Kensdale - 7 nearly a 6 for me just because of his first half passing was wayward and Jake Hyde had to have a word with him.

Ralph - 8 this guy is EFL standard he gets up and down the wing and defends very well but also is such a threat going forward.

Miley - 7 done the dirty work excellently today first game I’ve been too he hasn’t got my man of the match !

Husin - 9 JESUS this man oozed class today ! He was everywhere and won so many tackles and interceptions today not only that but on the ball he looked unplayable MOM

Mooney - 8 few of his direct runs in the first half were so good the Wrexham defenders couldn’t get near him, few wayward passes but that’s expected with how much his on the ball.

Hyde - 7 I like him his an excellent back to goal CF he gets his body between man and ball well and keeps it nice and simple keep him fit he will score goals.

Dackers - 7 good feet for a big man and won near in all his headers.

Subs -

Wreh - 7 pulled defenders about and showed some excellent touches and quick turns personally would start him next week with Hyde.

Bridge - not on long enough to give a rating.

Fonguck - 6 not good enough for me

Paul Clark made the point that in the modern age the assistants flag only after the play has finished.
He called it a nonsense, and I'm inclined to agree.

It looks as if Wrexham have forced the decision, whereas if Mr Lino puts his flag up straight away then, although disappointing, no controversy.
This is where common sense kicks in, and at this level, it ain't so common.
Regardless of offside/handball - it's the dithering that shows them up as fifth rate.

There again, if the lino has caved in under pressure, he should never officiate again.

The entire team was great today but Husin looked just like that player who joined us from Dartford, after losing his way a bit recently.

Bullying, harassing, playing simple but effective passes. The guy was absolute mustard and hopefully was taken off as a precaution for a knock.

I think he could be that bit of steel we require in an otherwise lightweight midfield.

Does that matter though? Neither the lino or the ref saw or gave it.
They caved in under pressure from the Wrexham players. How can they change their decision on something neither of them saw?
Exactly that. From where I was in the south upper, Hyde looked offside. Looked straight across to the Lino who kept his flag down and started going back to the halfway line. Ref was indicating a goal and it was only when Wrexham complained that it became an issue.

I think it was overall the right decision but made in completely the wrong way. If it’s offside, stick your flag up. If you don’t think it’s offside don’t be pressured into changing your mind.

Hyde came back from an offside position but it was marginal at best , I was bang inline with it and looked over to the Lino who did not flag .

A nervy first 15 minutes where we showed them too much respect but after that we were the better side , Mooney the best player on the park, if I was their owners I’d send Dalby back and get the cheque book out for him

Note to Wrexhams 2 centre half’s who made world class last ditch touches to deny us a goal .

Likes the look of Wreh and for me he has the edge over Hyde and should get a run of games
Mooney is class

One of the most entertaining 0-0s you'll see.

I wanted the old Noor back and, boy, did we get him today. Showed exactly what we've been missing in the middle and took some of the pressure off Cav too. The system worked so much better today and allowed Mooney to cause havoc with his runs at Wrexham's defence.

Was impressed with the quality Jake Hyde offered, him and Dackers have some way to go on the understanding side of things, but he worked very well with Mooney.

Defensively, so much stronger with Lopata back in the side, though I thought Hobson was outstanding today.

We were massively let down by the officials today, specifically the referee and the West Stand assistant. Both were lenient with Wrexham, allowing yards to be gained with throws, missing several hand balls and multiple shirt pulling, but harsh on us. It was a case of us against 13 - only the East Stand assistant seemed to have a proper grasp of what he should be doing. The disallowed goal situation was an utter disgrace and I thought Kev Maher was actually quite restrained in what he said about it on the radio.

Anyone any idea what Phil Brown was doing there, apparently with Robbie Savage, sat in the East Blues?

Collin - 8, top drawer save and looked confident. Handled the Tozer long throws well. Only downer today was some wayward kicking. Still didn't really understand what the ref was on about with his kick!
Scott-Morris - 7, not in the game so much but I think that's because most went through Ralph or Mooney. Challenges for the ball and had a good header narrowly miss in the 1st half.
Hobson - 8.5, MOTM, goodness, he's matured really well this season. Competent and composed. Gets a foot in and passes well.
Lopata - 8, made such a difference to those around him. No nonsense.
Kensdale - 7.5, also looked composed today. Well done to all three of the centre backs.
Ralph - 8, if Wrexham thought they were going to exploit our left hand side as other teams have done, they got a shock - Ralphy was back and back to his usual self!
Miley - 7.5, looked comfortable and was in everywhere.
Husin - 8, showed that bite in midfield we've been missing and that ability to get into shooting positions.
Mooney - 7.5, great effort and vision going forwards, some lovely passing but marking him down a bit for getting himself booked quite stupidly.
Hyde - 8, I thought he looked a real handful at times. Showed real quality and so unlucky to have that goal disallowed.
Dackers - 7.5, good first half but thought he tired hugely in the second.

Subs:
Wreh for Hyde - did ok when he came on, big and strong and stood up to their defence.
Fonguck for Husin - jury is still out for me, wanted to see more from him.
Bridge for Mooney - not enough time to do anything much but still got some good crosses in.

Bit of a tough one to take as we played really well, in regards to officials it probably feels like we get them every week because the standard is so poor at this level. However considering alot thought we would get battered today it's a great point and a good performance which I think shows the players still trust Maher, and we are still a team in progress, Hyde, Ralph and husin are just back from injuries, dackers it's his second game and not sure how much he played for his club, same with lopata, he probably hasn't played a great deal since he went back to sheff utd, I still believe we will finish higher than last season which shows we are making progress, you only need to look at where we was a year ago.

Dont see why colin gets so much criticism? Havent seen him make a mistake and his all round goalkeeping skills are quality! Ok his kicking lacks direction and is sometimes too long but his handling is good, great shot stopper and is a rough diamond! Obviously steve Arnold is our number 1 but we are safe with colin until he returns.

It was pretty obvious that some of the Wrexham supporters were going to disregard or interrupt the National Anthem. In the event, it didn't matter as the Southend crowd and the majority of the Wrexham supporters sang the National Anthem loud and proud or just stayed quiet, their choice.

To start lobbing abuse now at their Fans Board would just be coming down to the level of their fans that were gobby. Time to move on in the knowledge the Southend fans did their bit incredibly well.

Dakkers may have handled the ball. Need to see the highlights.
It was disallowed for offside which the Lino did not signal until after the event and when Wrexham's players tore him a new one. It seems, under current rules, a lino will not signal for offside until after the move has finished. I may have misunderstood that explanation, but I think it's what Paul Clark and then Maher said on the radio. Even so the lino in front of the West was probably the most hated man in the Kingdom for a period of time.
