Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-0 Wrexham

Word on Collin…..he’s had a bit of criticism but obviously can deal with it as yesterday he was very solid…..apart from the dreadful kicking.
At the moment will never be as dominant in the air as Arnold for obvious reasons but stand by that he will be better than Bishop and previous young prospects. Athletic and great hands , he’ll definitely suffice looking at yesterday but getting Steve back aerially will make it very hard for the opposing teams to score!

We said this yesterday. We do need Steve back but Collin has done well having been chucked in. Some of his kicking was poor but he’s growing in confidence.

He is doing really well, but i do panic a bit when he comes so far out of the box at times and lingers. I always think he is looking to get lobbed again.

Just a great game of football! Maher’s brand of attacking football is so exciting to watch at times. Once we develop an end product we will climb the table.

Outstanding performances from Lopata, Hobson, Noor and Mooney. Lopata for me shading the MOM for shackling a very dangerous forward line, ably assisted by Hobbo.

Rest of team also played well. No passengers today.

Well played boys and great work from Maher changing it up.
yet, when we lose, some on here say he's tacically naive. Let's just give this management team a chance. Give them a few seasons and get some stability in the club

From the Wrexham forum. Credit to Southend for making the most probable team to win this league look bad,

We got a lucky point. Better than nothing but too many players not at the races. Rarely won a tackle, Lost many balls to an aggressive Southend press. Rarely won second ball. Slow, pretty much all over the pitch.
Passing was poor. Effort about 75% of what is expected.
Jones was the best of a missing Midfield in the first half. No one stood out after 39 minutes. Too static and little or no movement and creativity.
Some great direct runs by Southend that got us on the back foot,
Fortunately, even though they had the best chance, they couldn't take it.
One step forward last Tuesday, 2 steps back today.

Trouble is, Steve is far better than anything we have had over the years cutting out the high stuff. If it was a choice of Collin or Ox I would prefer the 19 y/o

We did take the best chance, it’s just that the ref and lino decided to disallow the goal for a non existent offside. ( if they’d seen the handball then…..)

I have woken up this morning quite hoarse after the game yesterday
So frustrating at times and not made any easier by incompetent officials.
Thought the first 15 mins Wrexham were the better side and when we finally got out of the traps we were far the better side and thought given all the money thrown in Wrexham, and them buying up all the league threats they were just an average side.
Prior to the game I said I would have been happy with a point but, felt we deserved all three yesterday.

The back four were solid and so good to have Ralph back who seemed to scoop up everything in the first 15 mins.
We got Wrexham rattled early and maintained that and it showed.
Good to see Noor back in the side too.

Can’t pick anyone out today and for a 0-0 the score didn’t flatter the game.

We deserved the win, especially after our second half performance. Everyone put in a stint and I thought Dackers and Mooney were outstanding. Collin solid and great save first half.

The disallowed goal - clearly the decision comes down to VAR......... Very Average Refereeing. A total debacle. If the flag didn't go up when the ball hit the net, then there is no justification to change that minutes later. This one decision had real ramifications for us, sending us down to 17th.

Even the away fans thought the ref was abysmal, as they were clearly chanting "Rectum" from about the 84th minute. (ps they were quiet for 600 fans so that says a lot for how well we played)

Wrexham respected the silence perfectly. They were never going to respect the National anthem and who can blame them off the back of 100s of years of oppression by the English (who are of course famous for respecting national anthems). They were drowned out so let's call it honours even there.

You're absolutely spot on with everything else you've said. I was really pleased with the performance but really disappointed we didn't press it home.

Yes well done for the minutes silence but don't make excuses for them. This was not a rugby international, the anthem was part of the commemoration.

By the way there was not a single Wrexham fan who has ever been 'oppressed' by the English. Still if you learn a language so that you can speak to less people, I can see why you would feel that way. :Winking:

Please note this a Sunday morning joke so don't answer with any politics.

The disallowed goal is the worst decision I have ever seen I’m a Sunday ref and I just can’t believe that the ref has chalked it off it doesn’t make any sense at all…. On a park on a Sunday that could happen but I’d stil give the goal and say to the Lino you have to put your flag up as you didn’t goal given and that’s on a park ffs!!!… if Wrexham don’t intimidate him…. It’s a goal so intimidating officials is the way foward is it!!! This stinks I can’t grip it

Best bit of the match for me was watching "Mad Tickler Man" and their long-throw specialist getting friendly.
Looked like the lad was getting thrown out at one point.

Cheeky respect bro.

Morning after, a week that ought to have got us 9 points brings in ONE!
The righteous anger needs retaining, and building up for the remaining 30 odd games.
The time and escape factor for dropping such points is fast approaching .
Wealdstone tickets booked!

As we have made our point about the ref, how about the game.

Biggest plus point was the work rate and response after Kevs outburst. Unlike some on here the players didn't run for their safe space. Hyde, Ralph and Noor proved Kev right. I have been watching Fonguck with growing suspicion, he was starting to look like Noor at the end of last season. For Noor to come in for his first game v Wreham that was a great performance as our set up means the two CM's have to be at least a 7 every game.

Indidvidually the award goes to Kasper. There are free headers for CB's then there are he beat Goodship in the air type headers. Then there are the ones I call battling headers. Climbing over the their target men, wining them and not letting people on £4,500 per week have an easy day. Kasper was excellent in the first 30 mins so Mullin and Palmer never got into the game. A perfect example of the leader at the back who inspires others. Kev accused some of hiding on Tuesday...Kasper enjoys hunting.

Agree with Barry Silkman about Dackers and Hyde. It was their first game together but they are both number 9's so not used to working off another players flick. Thats not a criticism, they both done well. Dackers was in good positions twice in the first few minutes but like the rest of the game we did not cross it early enough or good enough. Right near the end Dackers won a great flick but we hadn't reacted before the touch. We have a good option so use it and believe in it.

Colin made a save that other keepers may not have. Wrexham tried their best but he is confident has good feet and save hands. Others have either not come or flapped. For those that think he needs to be in the Isthmian league on loan.....I think Chesterfield might take him.

Yes it was only a point on paper but those of us who were there know it was more than that....Remember it was only a point at Bromley on Boxing day but that proved to be one of the most important in Kevs career so far. Lets see what happens next.

Nicely put as always.

Agree that’s it criminal not to expect Dackers to win those flicks, and not make the run.

Couple of bits to add…..

To be fair Fonguck did well when he came on as he was able to get around and continue the press we had implemented so well throughout the game - but that the point, he came on with fresh legs and I see this as his job now that Husin seems to be back with a bang.

Lopata was excellent, so calming and authoritative…… but good god Hobson was immaculate yesterday.

I’ve been a big critic of Shaun previously , seeing him as the wink link, an accident waiting to happen, but I am eating my words - he was sooo good yesterday, along with Lopata, they didn’t let moneybags palmer (or Mullin) get hold of the game up top. We bossed it in the air and between them they won virtually every header they needed to.

Top marks.

Fair result at the end of the day and pretty enjoyable overall. Defence didn’t do much wrong and I was really pleased for Colin. That save was outstanding as well as a massive confidence booster for him.

We’ve now played three of the best sides in the league and just maybe yesterday was a glimmer of things to come.

That minute silence and the National Anthem was a killer 😢

Overall though a good day at the office.

Well done Kev and the lads.

Blue Army 👏👏

Good looking team for me, at last, hope it,s not too late
Wreh should get more game time, Powell still has a role to play when he can calm down in front of goal ( Not all bad he has scored a couple of decent goals of his own making)
Must keep all these guys fit.
