Transfer News, Gossip & Speculation James Morton Signs

Transfer news
New Signing Announced: By Southend United FC

We are delighted to announce the signing of James Morton from National League South side Weston-super-Mare.

Morton, who is a central midfielder, joins the Club on a two-and-a-half year deal.

The 24-year-old has played most of his football in the Bristol area but now makes the move to Essex to become Kevin Maher’s first signing since the lifting of the transfer embargo.

He spent 10 years with Bristol City, from 2013 to 2023. Morton had three separate loan spells with Bath City in that time, playing 84 league games for the Romans.

Morton has also played for three different clubs in the EFL, Forest Green Rovers, Grimsby Town and Gillingham, making 19 appearances in League Two and one in League One.

This season, he has chipped in with three goals for Weston-super-Mare.

“I’m over the moon,” said Morton. “Ever since the interest came up it was something that my wife and I were really open to, in terms of moving and living in the area.

"It’s a really exciting time with new ownership at the Club and on the football side, and with the style of play the gaffer likes, everything just ticked a lot of boxes for me. I’m fortunate to be coming in at this time with everything moving in the right direction.

“The management, the staff and the players are all in tune with one another and it’s been really easy to settle in. It feels like a really good place to work and I’m excited to get playing now.”

Maher said: “James is going to add to an already strong midfield department that we’ve got, he’s a very good footballer.

“He’s at the age that is perfect for us and his knowledge and understanding of the game is top drawer. It’s nice to have him in the building finally and he will add real quality to what we’ve already got.”

Morton will wear the number 23 shirt.

Welcome to Southend United, James!
