Post-Match Thread and Ratings Wealdstone FC 1-2 Southend Utd

Wasn't expecting that.
I thought we would dominate and put them to the sword.
Of course, changing four and your boss meant it was unlikely Stones could be as bad as Saturday.
But even so...
There were some decent showings: Gus, Kensdale; Collin, Cav, Ralph; thought Cards ran and made himself a nuisance - but others were just having a bad night.
As for the subs, not sure I wouldn't have stuck with what I had, although Kev wasn't to know I guess.

Sloppy play and passing a lot of hit n hope forward balls with most players getting caught dwelling or not retaining a ball into their feet but another win so all good , why bring Wes on first he was particularly poor at getting hold the ball wasn't upto speed at all then seemed to disappear..
Big up to Collin for his brilliant double match winning save!

the glimmer is still there
About 5000 to 1. Halifax won't lose their last 4 games. Then Aldershot could cash in even if that miracle happens. And even Oldham could finish above us with their game in hand and one point behind.
At least we're in a great position regarding the squad for next season, especially with a few coming in.

Delighted with the 3 points, but a very sloppy performance tonight. I lost count of the number of times we gave the ball away. We were lucky not to concede more than the one goal.

Cards and Waldron were dominated by the Stone's back line all night and the ball just didn't stick up there at all. It has to be said though that the service into them was pretty dreadful.

I had been softening to the idea of keeping Dackers here next season after some of his recent performances. However his performance after coming on to replace Waldron was nowhere near good enough. He trotted around at half pace and never once tried to close people down. You could hear Kev going crazy at him on the sideline.
That said, I thought Kev made a mistake by not bringing on Wood instead. We were crying out for someone to play in the hole behind Cardwell as Wealdstone had picked up the majority of loose balls in that area of the pitch all evening.

Cav and Ralph were the standouts for me.
Morton had a good first half but faded badly before being replaced.

You have to give credit to the players for grinding out the win when not playing well though. It's also another game where we've come from behind which is to be admired.

Final mention to Colin....what a double save that was in the last few minutes....not just making the initial save but getting back up to block the rebound.

Add some more pace to the side and a creative midfielder who can break the lines and we'll be a force next season.

If only two or three of those recent draws had been wins. Wealdstone at home, Oxford away, so near yet so far. Still all in all an incredible season however it ends. We simply have to be fighting to win this league next season. The play-offs should be the absolute minimum.

First five started brightly and dominated possession, giving The stones the runaround. But we had no imagination or drive in the final third. Then, as is becoming our trademark, a defensive mistake not cutting out a through ball, let in their winger and Kensdale cuts out the delivery in the box to give away the corner, from which they score. We just keep giving ourselves more to do than we should. However we keep doing it it and we did again.

In the end of the half after missing a convertible header, Ralph scores from the edge of the box and we go in 1 all.

Second half, we were a bit better, but then we both Morton and Miley yet again got caught in possession, both of which ended in shots that could have hurt us, but thankfully didn't.

Cav then picks up the ball inside their half and with them backing off, drives forward and puts the ball in the bottom left hand corner and we complete the comeback.

Wealdstone in their position needed to push forward and they did. they put us under pressure, which to be fair with a combination of good tackles, closing down and getting the ball clear we were coping with. UNTIL, from yet another chance and from point blank range a shot is really well saved by Collin and he then dealt wit the follow up and saved two points for us. Great keeping! Especially with a couple of other saves and dealt well with the pressure we came under in the second half.

We saw the game out and claim the win, with at times an unconvincing attacking display. Cards and Danny had very little to feed off, but both never stopped trying.

I don't normally give marks but I will tonight.

Collin 9 MOTM
Gus 6
Taylor 6
Kensdale 6
Ralph 7
Bridge 6
Coker 6
Morton 6
Miley 7
Waldron 6
Cardwell 6

Subs:

Dackers 6
Fonguck 6

So that's 72 points earnt, 3 more than last season with 2 games left. Can't knock that achievement under the circumstances the squad have had to endure. Here's to progressing in the same manner next season!

There's generous.
The subs get the same mark as Gus, Kensdale and Cards?
I guess it's a game of opinions.

Felt a bit end of season tonight which was odd with still a lot to play for for both sides. Can’t say we played well but in the end two excellent goals won us the game. We seemed to dominate the ball for large chunks of the game without creating many chances. Wealdstone seemed to just sit off let us have the ball and wait for a mistake. They scored from a corner that came from mistake. Ralph then scored an excellent goal after missing a simple header.

Second half followed a similar pattern. We had lots of possession without creating clear chances with Waldron and Cardwell starved of any service. Then out of nothing Miley scored another excellent goal to put us 2-1 up. The rest of the game was played in our half with Colin making some outstanding saves to keep the acoreline at 2-1. So not at our best but winning a game under those circumstances is a positive and now 14 unbeaten

MOM Colin

Last away games for us as can’t make Fylde.
21/24 completed with 7 wins, 9 draws and 5 defeats. 4090 miles travelled.

If it weren’t for Collin yet again we would have found a way to give away another 2 points. Groundhog Day but we need more creativity and threat next season if we aren’t to place ourselves all too often in a similar position next season.

To have 30 minutes of total domination, as we did at the start of the game, without mustering a single shot let alone a save highlighting the issues.

But there is so much that is very good. 4 or 5 good targeted signings in the summer and we should be troubling very much the top 3.

We got 3 points which is a positive and scored when we actually decided to run at them.

The game was quite pedestrian at times with that usual casual play around the back.

It's highly unlikely we will make the play offs but would be nice to take it to the last day.

Miley is looking like his old self again but he needs to get the ball forward instead of his usual sideways passing. Great finish from him, which begs the question. Why doesn't he and other midfielders drive and shoot more often.

Colin did what he does. He is so far improved from when he first came in. He is excellent for his age.

We nearly threw it away at the end by going so deep and squandering possession.

We will have to be far more ruthless next season and sign some more attacking options if we are serious about top spot or at least top 3
