Billy Best took 5 matches to score his first league goal for the club at home to Halifax Town in February 1968 and then scored twice at Exeter City the following match and 6 days later scored his first hat-trick against Chester.💙🦐⚽

Do you have any details on how many and which forwards in recent years never scored for us either on loan or permanent signings.

Some of these stats can be quite misleading. For example Matt Rush's 12 matches included 10 games where he only played a combined 56 minutes (plus stoppage time).

Some may remember a forward called Jim Conway in the sixties. I think he went many games without scoring and wasn't very popular but suddenly started to find the net on a regular basis.
Of course. Slim Jim made his debut against Watford and went 8 league games and 1 Cup game (1-0 defeat at Yeovil) before scoring at home against Palace. Even then he was never really prolific being outscored by Beesley, Gilfillan and Ray Smith that season. He had a long and interesting career either side of his couple of years with us.

Big Jim Conway made his debut at Watford in a 3-1 defeat on the 29th.October 1963. He played in the next 25 matches scoring 8 times, Jim scored his first goal for the club on Boxing Day '63 in a 2-1 win against Crystal Palace some 10 matches later.

Mike Beesley scored in his first 5 games starting 18 August 62. After those 5 games he had 8 goals.

Stuart Brace scored on his debut on 19th October 73, the 12th game of the season. After his fourth game he was top scorer with 6 goals and ended the season with 20 in 35 games.

Stuart Brace scored most of his goals within 12 yards of the goal. He did what none of our lads seem to do that is make a run into the danger area when you anticipate that a cross is coming in. It happened yet again yesterday Jack Bridge put a superb cross across the goal about eight yards out in the first half. As usual nobody was on the move into that area.

You’re correct - the only one who loves is Gus - sadly Jack is an even bigger culprit for crosses that come in from the right hand side. He is usually back on his heels just watching. As an infrequent traveller I hear Paul Clark and Glenn Pennyfather criticising every week.

Stuart Brace, like David Crown started their careers as wingers .

Is this the same person?

This is a fair point but would have required a fair bit more work. If anyone wants to do the leg work am happy to amend to show how many were as sub.

I’m glad there’s some examples of players who can good after slow starts.

The most interesting name in there for me was Gavin Tomlin who I remember as someone who was pretty decent for his one season with us.

Leo Stevens - first game 4/11/33 at Aldershot, didn’t score until the 23/12/33, his seventh game. He scored a hat trick in a 3-0 win at home to Bristol C. He would go on to score 21 goals overall, including 5 braces
