Dadzone

Another new Shrimper arrived yesterday!! My new son was born at 10.36 (following the quickest labour ever.... I swear I put in more work driving the wife to the hospital!!!:D ). All fine so far but my daughter (2.5 years) is already showing signs of jealously.... "There may be trooubbbleee aheadddd....."

Anyway...congrats to all the recent Mums and Dads in S'Zone world! And to my son (nameless as yet!) a belated :birthday:

Congratulations, to Mr and Mrs Custard Splat and your new addition- all the best.....:)

Only just been able to log on (the new board has killed Smudger!) but wanted to let everyone know that we had a beautiful son, Kailen Frederick on Friday Jan 26th after a 22 hour labour....

4 weeks in and I'm suffering from intense sleep deprivation....anyone got any tips?! Someone please tell me it gets easier....!!

Smudger

Congratulations Smudger!

Is that middle name spelt with one or two Ts? ;)

:) Cheers mate.

Have to confess to the SUFC influence there but seeing as he was conceived the week we went to Swansea and was busy coming out (slowly) as we were getting planning approved for our new stadium there had to be a nod to his future team in there!!

Congrats. It does get easier - we go back to work and leave the missus to cope! Only problem there is that the evening seems to be her grumpy period (the baby, not the missus....oh hang on).

In all honesty it does get a lot easier. Ours has been pretty much sleeping throught the night from about 6 weeks.

Firstly Big congratulations Smudger.

But a quick question to all the Dads out there.

A bit irrelevant at the moment as Charlie (16 weeks old now) has a stinking cold, but at what age did you all move to Baby Rice or equivelent?

The thing is up until 2 - 3 weeks ago he was sleeping 9 - 10 hours through the night and then suddenly he started waking again around 1 am, And then would demolish a bottle of milk.

Other signs are as follows:

Watches intently what we eat
Hands are in the mouth constantly (his, not mine)
Turns away from his bottle
Can sit up

Cheers for all your best wishes fellas. Naps my only advice would be to get out and about as much as possible now because you're going to be indoors for quite a while and your time will no longer be your own!

I'm also interested to know re. the above question as my missus is absolutely shattered from the constant feeds. He dow seems to do nothing but eat when awake and I'm looking forward to the change to solids as I'll at least be able to pacify the little fella myself.....

:thump:

Both our daugters made the switch gradually to solids at about 4-4.5 months - but both couldnt stand the baby rice (so bland!). THey preferred farleys rusk and pureed apple/pear - introducing new flavours every week: first week: baby rice/farleys; second week: pureed fruit; third week: pureed veg (build it up gradually).

An invaluable source of info we got from http://www.babycenter.co.uk

Cant suggest anything on the feeding - but maybe try getting your missus to express and then you can help with the feeding.

And one thing about the sleep - don't worry fellas - more fun and games when the little 'uns start to teeth!!!!

dloman, yeah basically have to agree with what Stu says above, try them on a little bit of baby rice mixed in with their formula milk & see what happens. But as warned it might get refused, but keep persevering with other things like rusks & fruit purees (although I'd maybe wait until 6 months old and the stomach is a bit more ready before introducing the fruit).

Once baby gets the hang of solids, the lengthy sleep patterns tend to return, until the teething starts, then you'll probably find yourselves in the catch 22 situation we're in now (daughter of 18 months), her teeth hurt so she hasn't got the appetite she once had, and either the pain from the teething or her feeling hungry is waking her between 4 & 6 every morning, oh for the 11-12 hours that she used to sleep a year ago.......

Lads - anyone got any ideas on baby friendly holidays? When did the experienced pros on here start taking their kids away and what were your experiences of it? Would love to take the family away for a week but struggling to think of a way...

Cheers for any advice

We went away last year to Portugal when our little girl was 8 months old.
It was a villa holiday with the three of us & our friends who also have a daughter (who was almost 2 at the time).

Whole experience went really well other than the flight home got put back to a night flight (having paid extra to secure decent daytime flights) which meant getting chucked out of the villa at 10am, hanging around in a skanky 2* hotel for 6 hours and then to top it off the flight then got delayed even longer, so she was fairly annoyed to not be in her bed as usual on the way home.

If you're going somewhere hot, as long as they keep covered up and well hydrated, just go for it. I probably say this about anything Dad-related but if they're in their routine almost anything is achievable!

Top man - like the idea of going away with some mates who also have a baby and will investigate. Cheers mate.

I took my daughter away at 8 months to Malta to the parents apartment. Then at 9 months to a friends villa in Spain, with their two daughters. I would say that getting a villa is the best way as it can be so much more relaxing being at your own pace, also having friends with children of a similar age means early nights, does not mean going to bed as you can all sit around the pool drinking/chatting and playing cards whilst the little un's are tucked up in bed.

Regarding weaning - do not rush it. Too many people rush into weaning and they believe that this can cause issues later on in life. The current recommended age for weaning has gone from 4-6 months to 6 months. Remember weaning brings the smelly nappies and also it is a myth that weaning means your child will sleep longer. Sleep patterns are dictated by the other things than just eating habits.

Personally I waited 3 years to go abroad as didnt see the point in a holiday where I wanted to lay by the beach and couldnt as the toddler wanted attention.

When I did go went with the in-laws which I never would have before, but was a godsend as they would look after my 3 year old whilst we could chill out for an hour or two.

Having extra hands is very useful!

Bit of a pickle at the moment - Abigail's got reflux and thrush, so is bringing milk up then refuses to feed. Any suggestions?

Phone the health visitor and see what they say.
Reflux is really common & nothing to worry about (keep those muslin cloths to hand, especially if just about to leave the house!!!). I take it you mean thrush in the mouth/throat?

Thanks - the midwife's come and gone now, and everything seems to be a bit better today.

Yes, thrush in the mouth - but the nystatin seems to be calming things down for the moment
