Everyone knows that having one of these players can benefit any team and since the departure of you know who, there have been numerous calls for us to get one in. Never an easy task.
It got me thinking how many times an SUFC player has achieved this feat, so using Robin Michels excellent SUFC Database i trawled through season by season noting the top goalscorers. I've taken the period from 1920, as that was our first year in Div 3 South, to last season.
-23 Albert Fairclough 22
-25 Jim McCleland 21
-27 Billy Hick 29
-28 Billy Hick 26
-29 Jimmy Shankly 35
-30 Fred Barron 22
-31 Jimmy Shankly 28
-32 Jimmy Shankly 20
-33 Jack Moffit 21
-34 Leo Stevens 21
-35 Harry Johnson 22
-47 Cyril Thompson 27
-50 Albert Wakefield 28
-52 Alvert Wakefield 21
-55 Roy Hollis 32
-56 Roy Hollis 26
-57 Roy Hollis 20
-58 Sammy McCrory 33
-59 Bud Houghton 20
-60 Duggie Price 29
-65 Bobby Gilfillan 23
-66 Eddie Firmani 20
-69 Billy Best 31
-70 Billy Best 24
-71 Billy Best 22
-72 Bill Garner 26
-74 Stuart Brace 22
-76 Peter Silvester 23
-78 Derrick Parker 23
-81 Derek Spence 21
-84 Steve Phillips 20
-85 Steve Phillips 23
-86 Richard Cadette 25
-87 Richard Cadette 31
-89 David Crown 29
-90 David Crown 23
-91 Brett Angell 26
-92 Brett Angell 23
-04 Leon Constantine 25
-05 Freddy Eastwood 24
-06 Freddy Eastwood 25
So it's happened 42 times out of 80 seasons but only 3 times since 1992! And only 10 Southend strikers have netted 20+ a season more than once.
I've done this post purely for informative (statto) reasons.
