he was the main supply route for the team that won our first title. Stead was solid but nothing spectacular IMHO

Micky Stead was before my time, but he's in the top ten all-time appearances and a member of the record-setting and title-winning defence of 1980-81.

I'd like to suggest him back in for Shaun Goater, for the reasons I suggested earlier.

I'm up for dropping Shaun Goater... he is a 'legend' but not a true southend 'legend' as he was only here for 1 season

Well, I'm putting the Goat back in for Pat Scully. Pat was a solid, if unspectacular defender - and not part of a promotion-winning squad. The Goat, on the other hand, gave us an absolutely incalculable yet invaluable sense of well-being when he came to Roots Hall. He made us happy. He made us believe. He kept Fred hungry... and he helped us win only the second gong in our history.

He may have only been with us for a season... but what a season. Feed the Goat - we missed him more than we thought we would...

Ooh. Err. I thought the promotion winning centre halves were Spinner & Dave Martin, and that Pat didn't come until the following summer...?

Nah, think Pat came in (on loan initially) part way through that season, but certainly did help us get up - and was a rock for us for the following seasons.

(Great tackle at Bury BTW - sent off on the half-way line!:hilarious:)

I think Scully is more of a 'legend' than Goater - but if there is a place for Goater in the 50, then he should be in there somewhere.

So, is this supposed to be playing legends, or just any legends?

Because clearly Webby would get onto the latter list, and if that's the list you're making then you've got to add Uncle Ron, surely!

But if it's players only, then Webby's got to go, I'm afraid.....

We can't have a Webb on a list of playing legends, now can we....?

I thought the initial post was quite clear on this matter.

mark gower? part of two promotions and 4th highest midfield scorer in the championship, great, loyal player.

Keith Mercer in place of Dave Smith

Keith was a prolific goalscorer in the Championship winning team of 80/81. Dave Smith was only the manager and managers shouldn't be in the list. Failing that, kick Simon Royce out for being a rubbish kicker and a non achiever at Southend!
