Man in charge on Saturday is Carl Boyeson from Hull. He is a reasonably experienced official in his 9th season and will be officiating his 9th Southend match. So far we have won 3, lost 4 and drawn the other so a win would balance that out nicely. His last two Southend matches both finished up 3-0. Most recently the 3-0 victory last March against a woeful Walsall side. No complaints with an early dismissal and two yellows, all to the visitors. Before that was the 3-0 defeat in the early kick-off match at Leicester the season before last, where he didn't caution anyone and before that a 4-3 defeat at Hartlepool the previous season.

He has been a bit of an enigma over the years. His career was going nowhere fast. In fact three years ago he got no decent appointments and was probably the only referee other than first years not to get a Championship game. He possibly had a bit of a re-think on his style and came out the following season showing just 42 yellows in 36 games. Bear in mind 8 of these were in the Leeds V Brighton game that year, apart from that, that's less than a card per game - exceptional. Lo and behold he started getting plenty of Championship appointments and that has continued since.

I've always thought him to be no better and no worse than average, but he is still getting some decent appointments. Not the nimblest of officials, he doesn't get around the pitch as well as some.

This season's card count is a below average 43 yellows from 18 games and just a couple of reds.

Assistants are Simon Bennett (no relation!) from Stoke and Darren Bond from Burscough in Lancs. Jeremy Simpson from Carnforth, also in Lancs, is 4th official.

On Tuesday we go from one of the biggest officials to one of the smallest, when Andy Woolmer returns to the Hall - joy!

Probably a stupid question, Mick, but are you saying that assessors and the people in charge of giving out refereeing appointments at various levels look kindly on referees who keep their cards in their pocket? It's just that that seems to be the opposite of the impression that is often given...

No, you're right. It may be that the upturn in his career co-inciding with a new minimalistic approach to carding was just that ... co-incidence. Maybe he changed other things in his refereeing style too. Difficult to say, but certainly leniency is something which only the experienced referees seem to get away with but they've learnt how to control games without a plethora of cards. Of course some referees keep going, cards blazing, right to the end - Keith Hill springs to mind.

I've probably not answered your question, but I'd say generally the assessors would not necessarily favour those who keep their cards to a minimum.

Elsewhere Graham Salisbury, who refereed the match against Shrewsbury last week has just been given the middle for the Johnstone Paints Trophy Final at Wembley. Probably a retirement present.
