An A to Z of World Cup Memories

W- Chris Waddle's 1990 penalty miss against the Germans.

Seems I've already been 'Waddled'. That will teach me to read the thread properly. Doh.

And finally, I'll go for P - Stuart Pearce's penalty miss instead. There's a lot to choose from isn't there?

I guess U would have to be a dismal memory, the brace from Uruguay’s Luis Suarez that ultimately saw England heading home in WC2014.

Q- Qatar holds 2022 World cup

M- Moore lifting World cup (Not that cheating ****ing dwarf goal)

A-" Animals" as Sir Alf called the Argies in 1966 The weird stat on that game we committed 33 fouls and Argentina 19 (Not many people know that )

Almost a strike out but I’ll give you E for England lifting the cup in 1966. M is gone to the cheating Argie.

Qatar isn’t a WC memory.
A.... meh. Aldridge substitution trumps you! ;-)

I agree U for Uruguay and Luis Sanchez but think that's the wrong memory of him: surely it needs to be either him confusing Chiellini with a steak or that terrific save he made v Ghana.

Option (b) of those two for me. I can remember it so clearly and said at the time that even though it was an absolute dick move, it was one hell of a moment.

Don’t think too much about it, just throw in the first few that really jump out from your personal World Cup memories. I’ll update the list as we go along.

A - Aldridge Substitution
B - Beckham’s sending off versus Argentina
C - Claudio Caniggia nearly getting killed by Cameroon
D - Dennis Bergkamp! Dennis Bergkamp! DENNIS BERGKAMP! DENNIS BERGKAMP! (v Argentina in 98)
E - England lifting the cup in 1966
F
G - Gazza’s Tears
H - Hurst's goal and the Russian linesman
I - Iran beating the USA
J
K - The killing of Andres Escobar
L - Lineker’s hattrick versus Poland
M - Maradonna’s “Hand of God”
N
O - Owen’s goal versus Argentina
P - Platt’s over the shoulder shot versus Belgium
Q
R - Ronaldinho floating that kick over Seaman (or... the "25 year old" Roger Miller!)
S - Schumacher assault on Battiston
T
U - Uruguay's spectacular save by cannibal/goalkeeper Luis Suares
V - Van Persie's header versus Spain in 2014
W - Waddle's penalty miss against Germany
X
Y
Z - Zidane’s Headbutt

F - Frank Rijkaard flobbing on Rudi Voeller's perm

I want to get Blanco's Bunny Hops in but we already have a B. The mind being blown at seeing that for the first time must have been like what it was to watch Cruyff turn for the first time before Dave McSweeney popularised the move.

ps Hurst's Hattrick, surely.

Can't believe we can't get Roger Millar's goal celebrations in there somewhere!
