Question Are contracts worth the paper they are written on?

Southend United seems to be killing a lot of trees with there concept of contracts. Cancellations here, and no commitments there. Players come and go as they please, not as there contract says.

So, I ask you. Other than things like a wage package yada yada yada, are contracts really worth it?
