I know they've basically got off on a technicality, but the right thing has been done here. How BA staff, who are paid double what staff on other airways recieve, could think that a strike of that length would be feasible over the Christmas period.

To potentially ruin Christmas for that many people takes a special type of *******...

it's bad PR from Unite, but I do feel for the workers. They've been shafted by the management.

Unite called the strikes after the ballot of its 12,500 cabin crew members showed a 92 per cent majority in favour of industrial action.

The action was called following a dispute over the imposition of changes to crew numbers as well as a pay freeze and plans to introduce different rates of pay and conditions for new crew members.

Plane crew are vital to safety. They deserve outr support, not fury.

I'm not questioning their right to strike, some of the plans BA put together to stave off financial worries are ridiculous, but 12 days over the Christmas period? Not only is that crazy, it's completely unprecedented.

Do they ****. If a business is failing, unpopular changes have to be made. If you don't like it, go and find another job. In these times, that might be quite hard. So take the offer you got, because if you don't and the crew hold the airline to ransom, soon enough there won't be an airline to hold to ransom.

I'm sure the cabin crew of FlyGlobeSpan will take their place.

I'm starting to lose interest in my job. I've had the time of my life for five years and been to some 'different' places. But there's naff all on civvy street that I could realistically do for the standard of living I enjoy. So to an extent I'm trapped. I won't winge about it though, I'll just be grateful that the recession hasn't affected me in the slightest.

Quite...

The actions taken by BA are a direct response to their fractious financial state. So how Unite thought a strike that would've cost BA an estimated £250m would help their cause is beyond me.

You're not trapped. Mike Smith ended up in some bank doing naff all for decent cash.

It's all about fair play, and businesses can't treat employees badly. The fact there's a recession is neither here nor there. Other crew members brought in won't have had the same training, and let's face it, will be treated as scabs by existing employees.

I'm usually anti-union and pro-business, and yes, being held over Xmas was a bad idea, but BA is being run very badly by Willie Walsh, and if I was a shareholder I'd be demanding his resignation.

ps that's breaking a contract. If life was only that simple. If I don't pay my rent I get chucked out. If you sign up with a company you expect them to keep their side of the bargain, not change the parameters because they haven't run their business effectively.

why can you not be a copper on civvy street?

1.It's all about fair play, and businesses can't treat employees badly.

2.The fact there's a recession is neither here nor there.

3.Other crew members brought in won't have had the same training, and let's face it,

4.will be treated as scabs by existing employees.

5.I'm usually anti-union and pro-business, and yes, being held over Xmas was a bad idea,

6.but BA is being run very badly by Willie Walsh, and if I was a shareholder I'd be demanding his resignation.

1. Looks like it's Panto season. Of course they can, it all depends on the intepretation of badly.

2. I think it does. The recession has had a massive effect on the amount of people using air travel.

3. Why, are BA, so much better than every single other airline and are all other airlines unsafe? Or do BA operate a unique type of aircraft?

4. Who cares, they've got a job to do. If the old skool crew are out of order/ hostile, that's misconduct, and they could expect to say goodbye to their job, Preferably at 30,000 feet with no parachute if you ask me.

5. Glad we agree on something xx

6. Not going to disagree here either.

On a personal level, no disrespect to Mike, but that wouldn't interest me, and being a copper in Civvy Street would drop my wages by a massive amount, when to keep the same standard of living I enjoy now, id have to earn a lot more in civvy street. SO I'm trapped because I want a job i enjoy, on far more money. But like I say, I'm not complaining.

fair enough. I just think it's not all black and white.

Damn, i cancelled my BA trip and rebooked with Globespan on Tuesday!

Globespan have the contract with the MOD for the twice weekly UK-Falklands flight, and guess where I am.

They've got til next week to sort it, or I'm starting to swim back.

Agreed,

I really, really cannot abide strike action though. To me it's like saying, I'm the person thatas worst off, and nobody has got it harder than me, when plenty of people do. Of course there is always more to things like this that the media dont report on, but that's life. In the modern world, recession or no recession, invaribly, there are people that want to do the job of the striking worker, so strikers should, IMO never win.

Imagine if your kids teacher striked- you'd be up in arms.
Or the Police, and there was anarchy.
Or the fire service ;)
Or Doctors and nurse stopped treating your relatives in Hospital.

If they can't strike, then why the hell should people like jet setting trolley dolleys have the right.

How about a Ginger Porn Star?? got to be a gap in the market fella for the Ginger Nut Gobbler

Edited for accuracy..;)

Course they do but they are getting paid to be vital, and if reports are true that BA staff earn double of some competitors they should shut up and be grateful.

Can you say BA staff are twice as good as any others and worth twice as much?

Ive only flown with BA 4 times. They were late 4 times. I try and avoid them at all costs - even if it means paying another airline more.

The fact of the matter i BA are in financial trouble and their cabin crew earn vastly more than most other airlines and in fact nearly double that of immediate competitors, now in my opinion if they would like to keep their jobs then this is th wrong way to go about it. If BA continues to lose money the way they have they will be lucky to last the year and then where would their crew be?

I think that "strike" action is all very situational and im sure there is alot of stuff going on in the background that isn't being reported in the media, like there was with the Royal Mail stuff 8 weeks ago! Thats why i always think twice about commenting when it comes to people voting for strike action cos i know what goes on and isn't mentioned and in the RM's case ... that was the one of the main crux's of the issue. But i totally agree that a 12-day thing was waaayyy over the top and they'd have been better off doing it a day here and there!
