Was there on that New Years Day, sitting right at the front of the blue seats in the east stand.

We walked in with tickets about 15 mins before the game, and even then the que to get into the north bank went from the now north east ticket office, right out into the car park to the back wall and then turning and going right up to the top of the car park, near enough to the now shop, every man and his dog wanted to get into the ground that day.

The atmosphere, well it was pure hatred, from every part of the ground and it was relentess, the north bank asked barry fry to give them a wave, which he did, and the roof of Roots Hall nearly flew of.

IMO if you take Saturdays atmoshere and then times that by 10 then you might get close to the atmoshere of that day.

A friend of mine got into the north bank that day, and he said it was so packed that he could not even raise his arms, it was so packed.

Its a day i will never forget.

I still have a VHS of that seasons highlights. It's unbelievable how ****ing good we were for half that season, and also the talent throughout the whole squad. I'm not sure it's ever been matched since, we were destined for the premier league..amazing how things can change....

It was as they say "champagne" football. incredible the 4 or 5 years that followed, i was at every bloody game as well!

Southend fan, the ultimate rough with some smooth every once in a while....

That was by far the best football I have seen at The Hall in over 50 years of watching SUFC. Jonathan Hunt was head and shoulders above any other central midfielder in div at time. Otto so exciting to watch. The North Bank rocking. Then the fat one was gone, tempted by the porn barons promises.
All together now. There's a circus in the town, Barry Frys a f@@king clown. And Karen Brady is a fu............. They did go down too!!!!!!

I could not get in the North Bank so I went down and stood on the South Bank ,and chuckling to my self when it seemed the whole of Roots Hall was singing Karen Brady is a w***e Karen Brady is a w***e .

What a game that was. I was in the East Greens, right next to the seated Brummies in the Blacks. Remember Sansome kicking one straight at Peschisolidos arse and it flew in.

I was east greens as well! First time i'd sat there. Its always apparent when we are doing well as part timers have bought all the tickets in the areas i normally sit! The whole tilly era i sat in the west after watching a decade of cack in east blue/yellow!

i'd happily sit on the roof if those good times come back!

That was a unique atmosphere at Roots Hall never seen before or since. It was a game we had to win and it got through to the players. We will never know what would have happened thst season if Fry hadn't of walked out.
Fry has gone on record of saying it was the biggest mistake he ever made. Instead of taking Southend to the premiership he took Birmingham down and how we enjoyed that.

Can't believe this was 21 years ago. Personally I have forgiven Fry. It was really disappointing he left, as we were flying and knocking on the door of promotion as has been mentioned.

I personally would encourage people to move on though. A good mantra to live by is 'life is good, let it go, be happy now'. We have a lot to be thankful for. Yes he shafted us, but if you're still getting riled up by it now you need to move on.

And David Howell ("High Tower") wasn't that bad a player. He had a great game in a 1-0 home win against Middlesboro before he left.

They didn't try because F*y had unsettled them and tapped them up and was making promises to come and take them to Birmingham at the end of the season.

Indeed. The interesting bit is that they admitted it, and apologised for it.

I don't see how we got our own back by refusing to release David Howell's registration. Did you see him play?

Yes, and I thought he was pretty good. Either way, Vic got his own back because, regardless of what we personally think of him as a player, Vic ended his career.

I was in East Stand reds, in 56 years of watching the Blues I've never known an atmosphere like it, or a team playing such beautiful football. I'll never forgive that fat Judas for robbing us of the only chance of getting too the premier league

What a great day that was, combined with the Padova and Charlton home games that preceded it, the best time I think I've ever had supporting Southend. And Barry Fry is a fat useless ****.

Karen Brady was visibly shocked at the abuse. I was three or four seats from her side of the Directors Box as I had paid over the odds to get as close as possible. She is a tough woman who made her way working in the porn industry - but she was totally unprepared for the hostility and personal abuse that was showered upon her for the entire 90 minutes.

I well remember, Karen is a W***e , I am sure that her husband Paul Peschisolidos who was playing for Birmingham was left in no dought what the Southend supporters thought of his wife .

IIRC Brady has said in an interview that she was at the game with her Nan and her Nan asked KB what they were singing and she toned it down so she didn't shock her .
Fry on the other hand has said that it was Brady who asked him what was being sung as she could only make out her name and something For, Fry said that he told her what was actually being said.....

I've heard her recall the story a few times, the last time on the One show not so long ago.
She first claimed she thought it was Karen Brady's 24 and this is what she told her Nan, who was impressed we knew her age:hilarious:
