The main reason why I nominated Psycho was because it did not need special effects. Tautly directed by Hitchcock, with inferred violence rather than that of the gratuitous variety prevalent in many films of today.

I don't recall Carrie needed a whole host of effects, just a very scary performance from Sissy Spacek and lots of blood!
I've seen that film loads of bloody times and the last scene still makes be jump.
I'm going to have to re-watch it aren't I? Best do it in the daylight I think.
Also featured an early role by John Travolta who came to rather a sticky end IIRC.
