Best own goal

Could have been a poll, but more fun this way. At the risk of opening the site up to a flood of Borient, what is the best own goal seen at a Southend match, and why?

My favourite was probably Phil Whelan at Orient. He must have been the only person in the ground that didn't hear Flavs shout 'mine' as he stretched to head it past him. Genius.

Phil Whelan yes, at Birmingham though. Smashed the ball into the corner of his own net.
2nd place Tes at Orient. Top header.

My favourite was scored by Cardiff City's Rhys Weston at Roots Hall in our 1-1 draw on 13/1/2001. A 90th minute equaliser of the highest and finest order.

Thats the game. I was struggling to remember whether it was them or Swansea.

The best own goal I've seen was unquestionably Rhys Weston's last minute effort - in our favour(!) - when we were playing "too big for this division" Cardiff City.

As I recall, it ballooned off his head and over the keeper into the net right in front of the South Stand.  Cue general pandemonium around the ground, with first the home fans going bananas, and then with the away fans (led by a mad woman) storming across the North-West corner towards the teenage chavs (who had been giving it the big 'un all match) in the West Stand.

Oh how I chuckled to see the burberry-clad youths run...  I seem to recall it prompted a great cartoon pastiche in one of the fanzines.

Yep, the best own goal I've seen in a country mile, especially since it denied the Bluebirds a nailed-on three points in the very last second of the game.

Looks like I'm not the only one who enjoyed that particular goal...

Stretching the 'own goal' terminology a little, what about Roget's red card against Oxford in our last season in the old old Div 1? As he's getting booked by the ref in front of the east STand, scuffle breaks out in the box between (white) players waiting for the freekick. Linesman sees something, flags, talks to the ref who then calls Roget over and gives him a second yellow.

Big time O.G. for the ref. And we eventually lost the lead we had in the game at the time.

Aldershot away years ago, we won 5-0 and they scored two own goals that day I believe, one of which was a header from a corner about 12 yards out planted firmly into the top corner of the net!

The thing with Brambles OG is he couldn't have done it if he tried.

Another Orient goal I remember was McSweenys looping header over our keeper from the edge of the area.

I don't follow you? I'm relatively new to this - do I know you?

Fair enough! Welcome (ish!). I agree, Tes probably comes high (and often) on the list. He'll probably score more goals for us playing for Forest next season than he would have done staying at the Hall anyway!!!

yeah remember that game quite well. as MtS explained in greater detail the cardiff lot teared through the north west divide - about 5/6 seats wide of that orange stuff and a row of police! from sitting in the east i got a great view of the show!

However, favourite own goal was birmingham away in the league cup. i think this is mainly because it didnt mean much losing as i expected to get a kicking beofre the game! also remember the birmingham fans chucking bricks at us from over the wall and hitting a coach. nice people those brummies

I could be wrong, but from my recollection he slid it into the south goal. (Pedant Alert!)

Best og has to be Basil Brush away at Maidstone in 1990 - a beautiful volley from just inside the Southend half. Seemed to take an age to sail over Sammy's head. He could try the same thing a million times and never score. I guess that sums up our luck with ogs.

Hmm... not even my pedantry stretches to the manner in which own goals were scored in our favour 4 years ago...

Anyone remember Sammy throwing the ball into his own net against Blackburn in 1992/3? Or was it Swindon. Gathered a hopeful punt forward at the top of the area, clasped it to his chest and span round in one movement, then spilled it once he'd turned round to send it into the net.

Think it featured on Fantasy Football for a time.

I think it was against Oxford.
