Last year's LDV Vans Trophy finalists Southend secured their place in the second
round in a nailbiting 5-3 penalty shoot-out victory after the game finished 1-1
at the end of extra time.
Us skipper Wayne Brown missed the crucial final penalty for his side and Jimmy
Corbett coolly struck away the winner for the Shrimpers to secure victory.
Tes Bramble fired Southend in front five minute before half time with a
powerful low drive past keeper Aidan Davison.
The home side drew level when Richard Garcia netted his first goal for the
club with a 63rd-minute header from Kevin Watson's free-kick to steer the game
towards extra-time.
The Shrimpers had three glorious efforts to seal the win in normal time as
first Mark Bentley was denied with a last-gasp tackle on Brown after he was
clear through on goal.
Wayne Gray was then denied by the woodwork before Bentley again then wasted
another chance when he headed wide.
In extra-time Bentley received his marching orders after he clipped the head
of Us defender Stephen Hunt with his boot and earned himself a red card nine
minutes before the end of normal time.
