Piece in the Echo today, a bit different to the one on 22nd April concerning the casino and Morrisons, which seems to me to be the final piece of the jigsaw required:

Football chief Ron Martin has been praised by councillors for defying the recession and pressing ahead with plans for Southend United's new stadium.

Southend Council gave unanimous approval for the latest revisions to a proposed new stadium at Fossetts Farm and the redevelopment of Roots Hall.

Among the proposals for the new 22,000-seater stadium are a casino and a Morrisons supermarket.

Lib Dem group leader Graham Longley said: "This has been a long time coming. We have actually been waiting 20 years for a new stadium for Southend United.

The first proposals by the then-chairman, Vic Jobson, were actually turned down by the council in 1989 by a very small vote, but at long last we have got there."

The only voice of concern at the full council meeting came from Ron Woodley (Ind, Thorpe) who had fears about the inclusion of the casino and possible anti social behaviour and drink related concerns."

That's it then, full steam ahead - congratulations to Ron and the Club on this excellent news.

Superb news, a great start to the week.

So, is that it then?

The plans won't be held up any further, due to the failure to include a suitable 2m section of land, for an ant conservation area or something?...

I've heard they can begin only when the Great Crested Newts have finished breeding.

Just needs to get the funding in place and the contractor signed up...

Although it did say in last weeks echo that they hope to avoid the need for a number of compulsory purchase orders in the area around the Roots Hall site so I would imagine that as ""The majority of the cash for the stadium is coming from Sainsbury’s plans for Roots Hall, which include the supermarket and new housing. The final parts of this plan are falling into place."" the Funds may not be readily available until the entire Sainsbury site is fully acquired and the full cost of acquisition is known.

On Saturday I heard that Ron expects to sign his agreement with Sainsbury's very soon, and to start building this summer...

When does our 'Summer' start? When does our 'Summer' end?

Done a few searches on the net & you get quite a few different answers. The Met Office use 1st June to 31st August. Some say it's 21st/22nd June to 21st/22nd September one site even stated that today was the official start of Summer.

Seasonally the summer starts on the 21st June i.e. the Summer Solstice, whereas Autumn starts on the Autumn Equinox 21st/22nd September.

Always good to keep the pagan rituals.
