it's simple, just give it to the player with the highest FM ratings for influence and determination. Always worked for me
We've had different captains in the pre-season games so far including White, Barrett, Timlin, Leonard and even Matzusaka (at Canvey in the 1st half!) of what I've seen!
I still consider JW to be an excellent and credible captain but I do think he suffered quite a drastic loss of form towards the end of last season which might see him preferring not to be captain. I would be quite happy if he continued as captain, but I do think Adam should be club captain. Lenny and Tims both have the natural demeanour to be good captains but I think Lenny felt his own game suffered when he had the band for a few games before. It will be interesting to see.
