I should be learning to drive and passing my test in February, n I want a car, and so i've already started looking for both a car and insurance. I'm only after a small, second hand car, so that the insurance isn't as sky high as it could be, but does anyone know any good car insurers, and who will insure forces personell?

Cheers.

The Forces probably have an insurance company they are affliated with that will do you a good deal. I know the Civil Service does.

I have a small second hand car coming up for sale at around about the same time. Interested ?

Three years ago I spent a couple of hours trawling around the net. Despite all the personal recommendations, advice from garages etc, the best* quote for my high performance car (albeit with a higher excess) ended up being Direct Line. Direct Line also matched genuinely cheaper annual renewals (with proof) that I've received in the past two years.

Although Direct Line might not work for your circumstance a couple of hours pain constantly filling in the same info on a variety of web-sites is well worth the effort. Extra pounds in your pocket means better ICE, go faster flashes and furry dice for your Nova.

I'm with them and they are fairly cheap.

I just phone round the usual suspects (they are all in the thompson or yellow pages) and who ever gives the cheapest quote gets the business

When I was looking to insure my first ever car in 1989 (a V reg bright yellow two door austin Allegro with black vinyl roof) the cheapest quote was from a company in Benfleet.

When I went round to pay then the money I discovered the company was a one man operation which traded from the lounge of some blokes bungalow!

Their the best for Youths by about £200. Think 2nd best was Norwich Union ...

Your car says a lot about you.

If you drive any of those suggested above you will look like a big girl.

The real reason Michael Husbands doesn't play for Southend is because Tilson knows he ponces about in a 1.1 Fiesta.

Some insurers give a discount for limited mileage.
I found it was cheaper to insure a 5.7 litre V8 Pontiac (5,000 miles a year) than a Cavalier!

I remain utterly baffled by car insurance - not least at how some insurers see fit to quote a price twice as much as their competitors.

I was with Admiral for a while, as they had a "bonus accelerator" scheme - i.e. you got a year's no claim bonus in only 10 months with them. It meant that the annual premiums were pretty punchy... £900+ for 12 months of third party, fire & theft - but then, alas, living in SE London means you always get hammered on premiums - it is deemed a high-risk area.

Once I'd built up the no-claims, it got pretty cheap on my old car, especially once I'd switched to Endsleigh. They were only about £300 for 12 months' TPF&T.

Now I've got a posh nearly-new car (Volvo S60), and the best quote I got was Norwich Union - c. £700 for fully comp, which I thought was bearable.

I was with Tesco last year, but when it came for renewal, despite not making any claims, they tried to double the price to over a grand!

I'm now with Norwich Union, who are charging £768.00, fully comp, for a P reg Fiesta 1.4 Ghia X. That's though as a 19 year old who's only had a full licence for a year, I have to be as the second driver, with my Dad insured as the main driver. Otherwise, I've been quoted anything from £1,800 - £3,000 for a years fully comp!

My first insurance was £300 tpft on a 950cc Y reg fiesta back in 92 (18-20)
my next was £500 fully comp on a D reg 2litre sierra (20-22)
next up was £500 FC on an L reg Escort 1.6 (22-25)
now I have a Golf GTI 1.8 that I bought new in 99 and my insurance on that has been between 500-650 FC I have been quoted stupid figures £1000 + but then they dont want the business so they dont get it.
(age I was when I had the car)
If you shop around you can find a quote to suit and if you dont go looking for a motor out of your insurance age bracket you wont break the bank.

Elephant charge me £570 fully comp for my 1999 3.0 V6 Peugeot which I think is definitely reasonable, though I also go for the limited mileage option.
