If Bolger signs I imagine we'll only sign one more centre back, likely to be whoever Brown prefers out of Mads or Richards-Everton. Adam Thompson looks like he could be playing a big part this season at centre back.

Personally,I thought he was brillant against Millwall, though a lot of old codgers around me-in the East Reds- were complaining that despite the fact that he was first to the ball pretty much every time,a lot of his clearances went straight to a Millwall man.Given the awful conditions on the day, that was hardly suprising and certainly didn't affect our great win.

We can't blame PB for putting this in the public domain this time. I really hope we get him.

Fingers crossed the deal will be completed by next Tuesday!
Played once for us and did his ankle ligaments, so where is the good news?
Smacks of desperation with only a week to go before we turn up at Accrington with a makeshift defence and a misfiring set of strikers, except for the young Weston:smile:

Wow, glass isnt even half empty eh?

We had two quality loans at the end of last season, plus Keirnan earlier.

Nothing wrong, nor desperate, with using the loan system.

The loan system is well used by all clubs but it is also a shame and a tad short sighted. The amount of loan players we have had reduces our assets. Having permanent players for a club in Southends position is a must in order to maximise the opportunity of bringing a player forward and cashing in on him. You cant cash in on a loan player even if he plays brilliantly for us. We are a selling club, as are many, and the loans prevent us/ reduce our ability to nurture future sales.

We loaned Assombolonga and owned Gavin Tomlin.

At the end of the season we lost both for nothing, doesn't always make much of a difference.

Yes its great to be able to bring players on and selling them, but there's nothing wrong with using both methods. The majority of the players we play are our own and the majority of those leave for nothing anyway.

According to today's Bolton news our bid for Bolger has been accepted- apparently Bolton have inserted a sell-on clause
Fee is agreed- now down to the player to want to come and agree terms
i a m not surprised PB does not want to comment- at a very delicate stage and could easy go the other way

OBL saw Brown take a call from him though, so theres truth in it.
Not me personally, to be fair, but a friend who played in the match and is on here somewhere, he is a Southend supporter. He was the one having the chat with PB when the call came and who was shown it.

Hang on a minute!...........just come back from Toulouse, rather tired and almost certainly haven't read things correctly and got completely the wrong end of the stick Are you saying that we are trying sign Bolger on a PERMANENT and not on LOAN?????.......which IIRC, was originally being muted.

Correct we wanted to get him on loan but Bolton would prefer to sell with a sell on clause- we have had a bid accepted and it's now down to the player. As difficult as it may be to come to terms with that means we are intending to pay a transfer fee.

Not necessarily paying a transfer fee. If Bolton want rid of Bolger, they may let him come to us for free with a 25/30% sell on clause. It means they don't have to pay contract termination fees and can just cash in if he has a good season and we sell. He has a contract until 2016 and seems slightly injury prone, so maybe they would prefer to offload him to us and we can pay his wages if he injures himself again. Would make sense from their point of view if he's not in their plans.

Well the local report suggest we have had a bid accepted and fee agreed- but I am not suggesting it's 250k :-)
it may be in the region of 40-50k with a healthy sell on clause- and of course the 40-50k may not be all up front. But that is actually probably good business for both parties

but in relies on the player wanting to come and with a contract to 2016 that is not a given- he may also have a agent like Sololik's..

thanks for the precision. On what little we saw of him last season, that sounds a good bit of business. Didn't we also have a right back (cover for White when he was injured), who impressed enormously, before he too succumbed to injury following a brief cameo appearance?
