Read PJ O'Rourke's 'Eat the Rich' and Mark Steyn's 'America Alone'. You might learn something about the Scandinavian socialist utopia.

Do you really think that a government can dismantle its own services and bureaucracies with any kind of efficiency? Do you honestly believe that? If so, I'm staggered.

I don't know as much about the Norwegian system as I do Sweden, but I'm not Adrian Mole, so what can I do?

I speak to the Scandinavians directly personally they tend to know their systems pretty well (shrewd buggers that they are).

Well given they do it so well in other countries or when their management consultants , MD's CEO's etc etc it certainly isnt beyond the realms of relaity here , its mostly affected by in fighting and internal squabbling rather then any practical reasons.

Talk to them ;) (ok Norway is a bit of a cheat the country is ridiciuloesly wealthy used some socailist ideas used some captialst basiclly anything that worked and screw the political ideologies (they had a preist for a PM about 3 years ago it didnt work really but gave them a laugh))

Stalin, Mao, Castro........

What you have done is confuse socialism with authoritarianism. Socialism is to the left, authoritarianism covers the flat lined left / right spectrum and as we have both proven with our examples.

I am sure you've seen those "where do you fit on the poltical spectrum" gadgets that work on a north / south, left right basis.

Rusty and LF both proven right, we can move on ......

Yes, to be fair, they're not as one-sided as their American equivalents. Does anyone have any thoughts about the war protestors' mysterious disappearance in the US that I mentioned earlier?

My theory would be that they've dropped off now that there's a clearer timetable for withdrawal?

You don't think it's anything to do with the fact that Bush is no longer the Commander-in-Chief? Honestly?

I'm not really aware of any clear timetable for withdrawal in Afghanistan.

I filled in that 'political compass' questionnaire and I broke it.

Yes, I'm sure it has something to do with it, but it comes back to my point about actions. The war started under Bush's watch, under what a lot of people viewed as quite a flimsy pretext, so he's obviously most associated with it and is going to attract more vitriol- particulary as his administration were so consistently unapolegetic about the whole thing. I'm sure being a Republican didn't exactly help either, but I'll happily argue that this is down more to policy choices than a malingering liberal conspiracy- we're simply not efficient enough for the latter.

Interesting article from Byron York in the Washington Examiner, where Cindy Sheehan (a leading light in the anti-war movement whose son died in Iraq), attacks the left for abandoning her.
