I was sad to read that gritty bearded footballer Tony Grealish has passed away after losing his fight against cancer... it got me thinking about players i have seen play over the years that are no longer with us . Its a bit morbid i know , but here goes :

1. Les Seeley ( Man U keeper )
2. Dean Richards ( Wolves )
3. Gary Ablett (Liverpool Everton)
4. Tony Grealish (Luton, Orient)
5. Tommy Caton ( Man C)
6. Gary Speed ( Newcastle Everton)
7. Laurie Cunningham ( Orient , Real Madrid)
8. Marc Vivien Foe ( West Ham)
9. Jerome Boere ( Southend)
10. Martin Aldridge ( Southend)
11. Mitchell Cole ( Southend )

Can anyone name a better team + who you saw them play for ? You youngsters have got a distinct disadvantage of course......

Gr-Emlyn Hughes....colossus of the football world, wizard of the QoS impropriety...he surely deserves a place here?

Trevor Roberts; Dave Clement - Mike Doyle - Bobby Moore - Emlyn Hughes; Alan Ball - Billy Bremner - Gary Speed - Graham Paddon; Derek Dougan - George Best.

Quite a few of mine in that team although I'd try to find a place for Johnny Haynes, Alan Ball, John White and Bobby Robson with maybe a place for John Connelley on the opposite wing to George Best. Lack of big strikers though; we could always embrace inclusivity (twice) with Justin Fashanu.

I was always impressed with Emlyn Hughes , when I heard him recount a story of the first time he played for England.
He didn't realise that he 'got paid' a fee.
I remembering him being completely shocked and saying "Why should you get paid for representing your country" ? , adding that he would gladly play for nothing.
Top player with a great attitude.

That's a nice idea - I saw his brother play for The Dons but not Justin. Talking of footballing brothers, I also could have had Cyril Knowles at left back. Remembered Bally earlier this afternoon and as I'm not entirely sure that I saw Bobby Stokes play "real live" at Fulham in the mid-70s (when he was with Saints), I've rejigged the midfield and attack accordingly.

God forbid any of the current crop would think the same! Playing for your country no longer carries the honour it used to.
