US have taken the bizarre step of banning costumes and fake guns from cinemas. Real guns are allowed.

It's a terrible tragedy RIP to all

We need to stop looking at this as if it happened here, don't forget what mite seem normal in our culture here mite be slightly different elsewhere, ok we share lots with the USA but there are differences!

Yes TB, the americans seem to put the the right to bear arms by individuals above the safety of the population as a whole. Unfortunately these things will continue to happen while guns are so readily available.

Sweeping generalisation much? Just because the NRA shouts loudest doesn't mean all americans think that way (much like the tea-baggers). The NRA has 4.3m members, us population 313.9m.

Interesting that the youngest shot was a 6 year old. Having watched the first batman, i would not take a 6 year old to have seen it (i believe is a 12A under the BBFC), and also, having a 6 year old at the cinema at mid-night is also a bit questionable too?
I'm not trying to undercut that it is a great tradegy for a child, or anyone to have been shot, but would any of you with kids have taken them to a fairly violent film at midnight?

I can see it now.

"Why has the film stopped? I paid good money for this can't you wait until it's over to remove the dead bodies, they're not going anywhere are they..."

:thump:

Far more likely they were thanking their maker that they survived, and telling their families they love them than worrying about a ****ing film or $20. Infact I'd think they'd never want to see a batman film ever again.

According to the Small Arms Survey 2007 by the Geneva-based Graduate Institute of International Studies, US citizens owned around 290 million guns between them.

http://www.justfacts.com/guncontrol.asp this website estimates 70 - 80m americans own guns.

To me that seems a lot of people and a lot of guns.

On a more positive note murder and violent crimes are on a steady decrease in the US. Murder is apparently reaching historic lows.

We have our lowest murder rate since 1983

record lows in canada

Here's a really in depth report of global murder rates for anyone who's is really bored

http://www.unodc.org/documents/data...Homicide/Globa_study_on_homicide_2011_web.pdf

The pure murder figures, due to the changing manslaughter/murder distinction, need to be considered with caution. However there does seem to be a genuine trend toward declining violent crime generally across the developed world in particular.

In the aftermath of horrendous crimes like this it's too easy to fall into the mindset of the average daily mail reader and think that the western world is falling into a moral abyss when actually in terms of violent crime the world is actually getting a lot better.

One of the theories about this is that the declines are being driven by the historical decline in domestic violence

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2012/jul/19/falling-murder-rate-domestic-violence?newsfeed=true

So cheer up everyone the world is getting safer year by year. Perhaps we should all stop being so easily daily mailed into be being scared of strangers, ethnic minorities, young people, etc etc.

75m owning guns in a population of 314m is 23% of the population. Yes it is ALOT of guns but it's not a majority.

Just to clarify UK figures show that homocide rates (which includes manslaughter and infanticide) have steadily decreased from 1047 in 202/03 to 550 in 2011/12 and attempted murder has decreased from 882 to 483 in the same period.

See the UK is a safer place. Perhaps the more immigrants we let in the safer the UK will become :net:

Good shout apple although not everyone agrees.

Mind you if they get on with killing each other I don't suppose many people will care.

Could it be less murders though due to better treatments for gun shots?

That must be a factor in the homicide stats, but attempted murder is also declining. I think that our access to mass media is affecting our perception of crime in a way that is not supported by any statistical evidence. I'm certainly not immune to the influence of the fear that sensationism brings. Perhaps we should all occasionally sit back stop ranting and appreciate how lucky we are to live where we do.

Sometimes I think that one day the owners of the mail will announce that the newspaper has been one big joke and that really its a peice of genius satire which has taken the art of irony to a new level. Then I wake up and accept the fact that it has always been a far right vehicle to manipulate the minds of simple people, like steveo (no offense).

Didn't take you long to bite on a Daily Mail quote did it?

Oh, and why would do you assume I might take offense? I've never taken offense at an opinion of a lefty loser who I care nothing about, and I certainly won't start with you.
