Every crap SUFC player has had one decent game...

These "one game wonders" are quite hard to find. All joking and opinions aside, you can't be a pro and be rubbish at the game; there are too many selection processes to go through. But there are tons of average players who just don't set the game alight and so don't live in the memory. People like - Garry Cross, Danny Kerrigan, Alex Burns, Brian Barry-Murphy, Derek Hall, Blair Sturrock, John Walker, Warren May... christ, there are so many. But none of them had the world beating game that Gordon Connelly or Tony Richards had.

Would Steven Clark fit that bill? Tore Plymouth apart on his debut and then only did well against QPR in a cup game after that,

But it was one of the most memorable halves ever witnessed by those who were there. He more-or-less beat Brighton on his own. They put 3 men on him and still couldn't handle him.

First half he was the usual utter rubbish though.
This gets my vote too. They could literally not get the ball off him. Still to this day I'll never know where that come from. It's like he was swapped by aliens and then swapped back again after the game as he never got anywhere close to that performance ever again.

Let's see if we can get a whole team then.

So far, in goal the only nomination has been Brian Lloyd. He was the keeper when I first started supporting in 1969, but I was only 8 and don't remember if he was good or bad.

Maybe a better fit for this role might be Paul Smith, who pulled off a world class goalkeeping performance away at Brentford, way above anything else he (or many other keepers) ever did. He was incredible that night.

I think that's the criteria, isn't it? The player has to have had a blinding game or two that suddenly makes everyone think that there is a real player in there, but the rest of the time was just meh...

And all joking aside, none of this is to in any way insult our previous players, all of whom I'm sure tried their best.

We haven't got many defenders on this thread... but other names (for me) that fit the bill are

Gordon Connelly
Steven Clark
Barrington Belgrave
Neil Campbell
Tony Richards

The challenge is to come up with a name that you can back up a proper performance with and that enough people on here agree with.

Agreed. A workmate came to that game and was astonished how good Connelly was!
