Favourite Southend Pubs

With an array of new trendy bars and pubs in Southend these days, which are the ones that are making the grade with SZoners?
Personally, I have a new found love for the Slug & Lettuce. Great selection of continental beers (particularly Heineken, Peeterman Artois and Amstel) and a usually two or three Real Ales (an essential component in any good pub). Possibly the worst for drinks selection has got to be Varsity.

Strictly not Southend, but when the weather is good I'll go for a few beers at The C*ck Inn, just off the Tesco's bypass, or I think it's called The Anchor in Hullbridge just by the River.

I sometimes to go the Slug & Lettuce for a lunchtime pint but I'm yet to go their for a night out as it's so blooming expensive. I don't fancy getting a loan or a credit card to pay some of their prices.

I've frequented the Townhouse a bit more regularly, nice, smooth, clean ales and not particularly busy. The even play some heavy music in there occasionally.

Agree with you about Varisty, although it's food makes up for its lack of drink choice.

Cork and Cheese is a good little pub in southend, and although a typical chain, O'Neills is pretty reasonable. Southend is strange in that it has some really good clubs but the local pubs and bars are pretty poor in comparison to most other places. For a pub session I tend to stick to Leigh

The Cork and Cheese is no more!

Tend to go to Old Leigh on a Friday or Saturday night these days, don't like the nightlife in Southend and never have really.

Townhouse is a great shout

Surely the Slug & Lettuce isn't a Southend pub? Its a bland chain bar that can be found in almost every town.

Having said that, I don't think I've been to the Southend one. Where is it?

where the hogshead was. i kind of agree that it's fairly bland, but has a good range of beers and wine (although quite overpriced)

I used to love the Hogs about 10 years ago when it had the bar in the middle, decent beers and seats all around the edges.

Yeah I quite liked the Hogs too

I think the general state of pubs around the High Street is very poor.
