Definitely a factor.

We all knew Tilson was here to stay and was part of the club, with Phil Brown we all know he will jump ship the first chance he gets. Thats fine, thats football, but we would all prefer someone more attached.
An excellent point JM. However, it is the same for the majority of clubs, the manager is passing through....

Tilly also had a backdrop of a dozen years of failure* and his status as Southend's favourite son was in stark contrast to his predecessor who was seen as firmly Col Ewe. Expectations were at an all-time low, people had patience and the slightest bit of success felt more impressive.

*IIRC Dave Webb III got us to finish 12th, which was our only top-table finish in those 12 years

Off the field things were starting to look up. Southend fans were united behind the new stadium, drawn together by opposition to the nimbys in KARERS and it took a huge step forward in December 2002 with the council decision on B&Q's application. Permission was granted early on in the Tilly era, the youth team was being invested in and it looked like we were a club moving forward, together.

I dare say that the lack of success of South-East premier$hite clubs helped as well. W*** H** got relegated (hooray!), Spuds were midtable mediocrity, Chelsea had yet to buy their success - only Arsenal were competitive. It put Southend's success in a better light.

Any new manager replacing Brown isn't going to have that, other than hopefully W*** H** being relegated. Memories of Wembley, promotion pushes, play-offs, three Cardiff finals, beating Man U are all still too fresh in the memory. Indeed Eastwood's very presence is a constant reminder of better days. That doesn't mean you can't have success, but you aren't going to have the perfect storm that we had with Tilly. Off the pitch, Ron Martin is now the villain and not the hero he was once portrayed as. The whole club is full of cynicism instead of optimism and even a change of manager, welcome though that could be, sadly isn't going to fix that.

What Tilson had more than anything was success.

If he had floundered in League Two for 3 years no one would be galvanised because he was a local etc.

You can just see what 3 wins on the bounce did at the beginning of this season, there was a good atmosphere in the ground and on here.

No one was raising these threads when we were winning, thats all it takes.

Exactly. A month ago even a lot of us who were sceptical of Brown were giving him a lot of credit and I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to find the numerous 'Tilson out' threads on here every time we lost a couple of games.

That was a golden age for the Club and I remember saying on here at the time that people should be savouring every single second of it. Who knows when we'll see days like those again.
