Anyone else remember when he nearly became the first foreign player of the modern era to join an English club after the restriction was lifted after the 1978 World Cup. Obviously Ardiles and Villa became the first. It was even reported on ITN News that Southend were to become the first English club to take advantag eof the new rules.

Not sure why the move fell through though. Anybody remember?

Yes I do remember Dave Smith trying to sign a German , I think that the fee being mention was twenty five thousand pounds ,I could not remember the players name but it was in The Echo for a while .

You say that but the club paid out fifty thousand pounds out for Dave Cusack and the same for Micky Stead so there must of been some money in the pot at that time .
Transfer fees were much higher back then, 400,000 for Gary Poole comes to mind, i doubt we could afford a fraction off that now.

The fact we shelled out £500,000 for Mike Marsh looks the bargain of the century when you consider we ******* £400,000 on Gary Poole.....
