Tomorrow we take on the currently worst team in the whole Football League ..... or, to put it another way, just 15 places higher than Chester.
We have a very good home record against Hartlepool in the league with just 2 defeats in 22 games producing 14 wins. In three of their last four visits to the Hall they've had a player sent off.
The referee is Pat Miller from Bedford. A referee in his 10th season, it will be his sixth Southend match - the last being the home JPT tie against Crawley three seasons ago when he sent of Dickinson, not over controversially. Before that the previous season's home draw with Bury (2 yellows apiece). Then right back to six seasons ago 1-0 home wins against both Leeds and Northampton. The other one was the home draw with Swansea the year before that.
He refereed our pre-season home friendly against Ipswich earlier in the year.
He is in my opinion the second best Miller on the League list. Bearing in mind the only other one is Nigel Miller who let us down badly at Wembley, that's not much of a commendation. So, not a referee I like very much and he alternates between average performances and absolute shockers. A short, short-haired (apart from his arms!) and, sometimes, slightly fussy official, his card count is usually high, but this season it's on the low side with 31 yellows and 1 red.

Although in his 10th season, he only did 8 matches over the last two seasons due to injury; I was surprised he was retained.
Assisting will be Robert Hyde from East London and Colin Lymer from Basingstoke with Chris Pollard from Stowmarket as 4th Official.
