Just spotted this on the Morecambe forum, on the 'Southend thread'....

"Most people have no interest in Southend down here, the footy lads about follow West Ham, shocked now they know its a fiver to get in!"

Should be motivation enough for our 'fairweathers' to drown out literally tens of fans they will no doubt bring down!

Well it is the same for most towns close to the 'big teams' I guess the populations of oldham stockport and the countless other dingy north western towns will generally support united and City, unfortunately London has a huge range of premiership teams to pick from and seeing we are just down the road, I think we do alright for a league 2 side.

But yes that has motivated me, I'm actually going to the pub before the game for once so that will get me more pumped up I guess!

Don't worry about it, Morecambe are a club with 2,000 fans. Don't sink yourselves and react to that there ***** comments. Lets show today that we are SOUTHEND and proud. Winds me up a lot when some fans say some of us are West Ham, Leyton Orient are the East London side. We are Essex. Anyway, lets sing up and hopefully have a blast of a time.

after all morecambe are a big club, if they were in the essex senior league that is, big average crowds at 2,100.:stunned:

in fairness I spoke to a buntch of them in the railway and they all came through as good blokes, interestingly they all rated Sturrock , and all said that their support was sxxt

They are one of many Non Leagues side in the Football league. Dagenham, Acrrington, Maccelesfield, Barnet spring to mind. This 2 up 2 down to the Conference has given both Leagues a lopsided field with the likes of Luton, Wrexham, York, Mansfield, Grimsby and Cambridge traditional league teams with decent crowds stuck in the Conference.

If you read the original posting it implies that the quote came from a Southend based supporter. Certainly not from a Morecambe fan.

Twas me that wrote that. I can sincerely say no offence was intended. Had a great weekend in your town. Some fine beer, food and of course the weather. Thought the Rendezvous casino was great, wish we had something like that up here! You lads we met in the Railway were through and through good fans and all were polite that we spoke to, even if we did get a bit beer stained when Gerrard scored that free kick! LOL

My point was that the people in the town, taxi and even in Leigh on Sea yesterday, were all Fans of West Ham and weren't aware that it was a fiver to get in. One guy said it had cost £47 to watch West Ham beat Blackpool. Admittedly though our Hotel owner , Bertie, was most annoyed he couldn't get to the game and said that if Morecambe had won he wouldn't make our breakfast next morning!

Best of luck for the rest of the season and hope that your £5 offer retains a few floaters. Apologies if we knocked you off the top for a while but I must say we are quite embarassed the way Phil Jevons hacked your lad dow, I hope he is OK:winking:

Jevons has unfortunately embarrassed himself on a couple of occasions at Roots Hall now.

Although there was a fair bit of blood, Grant should hopefully be OK.

To be fair this was a weekend and you do get loads of Eastenders who love there day trip to the cockle sheds saying that we know a good amount of footie fans in Southend choose to support London clubs whats the point ... they will not suddenly start supporting Southend United FC until we come a Premiership club ..lol

Lets Be honest Southend United will not be Southend United if we was in the Premiership :-)

To be fair there is a painful element of truth in that support for Southend as never been as nearly as universal within the town/borough as we would wish it to be
The other side of the coin is that we do seem to draw support from the wider south east Essex area, you only have to look at some of the user names/locations on here to see that.
It's an old conundrum trying to work out how big (or small) our potential fanbase really is. But almost 10k for a L2 game even if it was a fiver for non-STHs shows there is still, even after events of the last couple of years, a fair amount of potential support out there.

Tbh my friend, the initial thread was started with an element of tongue in cheek!
Unfortunately, you weren't far wrong with your initial assessment, but our support, particularly amongst youngsters has really benefited over the last 7/8 years thanks to the double promotion and several 'glamour' cup ties.
You must understand that a majority of our fan base detest West Ham with a passion, due in no small part to their total disregard of the existence of football in Essex - they seem to feel they have a God-given right to self-proclaim as the region's de-facto team, which is just downright disrespectful, particularly given the size of our town and distance from London.

Glad I gave you a bite then!:hilarious: Similar thing happens when we go to Dagenham. Previously, they seemed to play away when West Ham were at home and vice versa, don't really know now if that is the case as you are often paired with another local club? I think all Clubs at our level are trying to do things to get more fans in during these hard times. A few in League 2 are now trying Friday night Football, which may yet be on our agenda but I hope not. We are surrounded by North West Premier Clubs within 60 miles and with Sky on the Box it isn't easy to attract potential straying fans.

I did notice on your forum Marky someone suggesting you should do a £5 offer when we visit in February .. having missed out on the trip up last year i'm determined to do it this time around and will be pleased to lend my support to it being a fiver

Fair point. I could see us giving your fans £5 tickets, but not our lot! I would suggest there would be a few of us sneaking into your bit. I think I should go now before I outstay my welcome. All the best and hope to see more than 105 of you in February :winking:
