I had a couple of chats with him on the 'phone about programme-related stuff and he was very personable. He was interested to know that my brother was coming over from Spain for a crucial last game of the season v Blackpool in 1988 and ran the story 'From Barcelona to Roots Hall' with the concluding line, "Let's hope the brothers get the right result." We did - running out four nil winners with goals from (if memory serves) Peter Butler, David Crown and Martin Ling. One of Crowny/Lingy got a couple but I'm not sure which. Crown, I presume.

It was the new Leyton Orient director of football!

Brilliant season masterminded by the Viking.

Just looked it up. So close 'Rob'. It was : Ling (2), Butler, Crown.

Ha - he rescued us from the debacle that was Dick Bate. Seem to recall that we won 5 out of the last 7 games to stay up starting with that incredible come-back v Wigan on AFD. I've still got the Echo from the Monday after proclaiming 'The Great Escape.'

Thanks, Andy - yes, as mfurok noted too, it was Lingy who got the brace. I remember PB opening the scoring with a stonker in the 1st half (about 25 mins.) but can't picture the other goals except a vague memory of Lingy rounding their keeper in front of the South Bank. Strangely, I remember that Blackpool had a really good sweeper in Shaun Elliott though you'd not believe it from that scoreline.

Nice one! In a sort of reverse, that was mine and my Dad's last game before moving out to Spain. I was even allowed to (for all of three seconds) join in the pitch invasion!

I don't like a lot of people but out of respect I would adhere to the minutes silence. It's about showing respect, sometimes you can be absolute bellend! How about you engage your brain before posting from time to time.
I would question the "sometimes".

:nope: Actually,it says a lot more about him, I think.

If I were in the ground today, I'd just stay in the bar a minute or so longer before taking my seat.

Come on Barna, you have your view but I'm not sure why you needed to share it over someone's death as it's a bit poor taste. That's rhetorical by the way, I don't need, or want to know the answer.

Fair enough.I've met him though, so there's a reason for my attitude ,which I'm not going to go into here.

I'm sure most of us have met people, not overly liked them and later they've died. That's life. No one is asking anything beyond showing some basic human decency and respect.

Hey. Love him or loathed him. A man has died. In my experience he was generally a decent guy but followed the "Vic line". Rightly or wrongly.
A minute being quiet is not too much to ask.
By the way. Am embarassed that it is my hand holding the pint in that press pic. Wearing a very 80's jumper and my fingers look like girls! I have MAN'S HANDS ...honest!!!!!
