John Hartson

RobM

55 years as a supporter!⭐
Just listening to the Radio 5 broadcast about excessive gambling with John Hartson, What compels people to lose everything to gambling? He says he'd spend days just gambling ignoring the wife and children; he would gamble on anything - even American football even though he admitted to knowing nothing about the sport.

I read the Keith Gillespie autobiography and he said he lost £47,000 in a DAY!

Surely it's not the amount of winnings for people earning pretty good money.

Is the availability of gambling outlets that's partly (mostly) to blame?

Crikey I feel guilty if I lose £2 on a Southend 1-0!

Don't even get me started on gambling. The only thing I have to be grateful to it for is, that without it, I wouldn't have been forced to divorce my ex, and so wouldn't have met my bloody wonderful 2nd husband.

Is two pound on a horse or lottery line a bad thing? moderation Is the key.

Gambling addiction, like any addiction - it's one of those things you can't really understand unless you've lived it (or perhaps like OBL lived with someone with it). I can't start to talk about how it's possible or what it's like, but people are addicted to all sorts of things and like mental illness or any illness, it seems to be able to affect anyone, no matter how educated, supported, grounded, rich they are.

I've read Gillespies book also very interesting, he got onto then horses and didn't have a clue to start with. The thing is it's easy to get drawn in like he did he bet on that one horse that came in and that's it your hooked. I used to do the odd football accy and if one came in I would think everyone was going to come in until the next 10/15 didn't I would give up. The good thing is mine was only £1 bets rather than lots of money but I can see how it can be addictive.

I studied at Leicester while Gillespie was playing there. He was frequently out on the student night outs and at the union being a sleezebag. He was pretty disgusting, usually on his own with a baggy Ben Sherman completely off his head and flashing cash at young drunk female students.

Crazy to think that a few years before that he was tearing down the wing in the Champions League.

Might have to give his book a read.

Do! It's a brilliant read and aptly called 'How NOT to be a football millionaire' he starts of by breaking down exactly how much he earned and at each club and says 'he ******* it all!'. Think he even admits how much of a sleeze he was on nights out.

No, it's not. I don't have a problem with people betting the odd fiver or so on a weekly basis. That was never his bag anyway, it was casinos. Don't bet what you can't afford, if you can keep to that then you won't have a problem.

That's exactly right. I used to go the casino twice a week, but I only took a small amount of cash with me, and no credit cards. The money I took with me was the money I would normally spend on a night out, but absolutely no more. To me it didn't matter if I spent it in a restaurant, pub or in a casino.

If I ever won (and it did happen once in a while, although I freely admit I lost more than I won - something an addicted gambler probably couldn't bring themselves to say) I would make a point of buying myself something so that I had something to show for it.
