John Terry and the 'unacceptability of racism'

How many people have seriously been a victim of racial abuse? Proper, nasty, name-calling abuse? Where the "white" is really exaggerated?

I doubt any of you have. So, no it's not a one-way street, because white people aren't restricted or prejudiced against in any way in the UK. If you're a man, middle-class, white, there really isn't anything to moan about.

Gay.

But what if I had wanted to rent one of those flats and couodnt becasue I wasnt Asian? My feelings may be badly hurt.

Your feelings aren't badly hurt though are they.

Opened my eyes a bit as I'm guilty of buying pink stuff.

And i'm guilty of not allowing my boys a toy kitchen even though my eldest loves playing with his female cousin's one, and getting them a Black and Decker workbench instead. They have, however, got a shopping trolley! Also, very few of their toys are blue.

That said, I never buy from the ELC because they are so expensive. Argos sell the exact same things, and are far cheaper.

Thats not strickly true Naps. Many years ago me and a mate were making our way back to Temple Meads coach station after a Bristol Rovers game and ended up wandering through the St Pauls district. We weren't wearing colours (Very stupid thing to do back in the early 80's) but some kids started following us on bikes giving it large but keeping their distance. One of them started getting very Rasta on us and my mate laughed out loud. Well the language!! Even I was shocked, (well not really) but we got proper slagged off and our colour was mentioned on more than one occasion. Admittedly, it didn't bother me or my mate, we thought it was quite funny actually, but if we had of taken offence, I doubt very much if it would have been acted upon after making a complaint.

Mind you, sending police into St Pauls not long after the riots there wouldn't have been the brightest thing to do.

That really is one of the key factors though isn't it? I very much doubt that white people generally DO take offence!

Not been thrown out of court apparently, the judiciary want to earn their full whack!

... and so the roundabout goes on, and on, and on. Racism, black, white, asian, whatever, is racism. However, as white's we're in the fortunate position that racism has, for the overwhelmingly large majority, not played a significant role in our lives or our history.

I'm aware that I will always carry certain prejudices. We all do whether it's race, class, size, upbringing, geography, beliefs, values, whatever. It amuses me somewhat that people don't recognise the race issue as the complex nettle it is, but hey, it's the internet!!

Has anyone been accused of being a Nazi yet?

On the white **** / black **** argument. I always had the impression that racial abuse was discriminating against someone because of the their race. I didn't realise there had to be an underlying historical atrocity (slavery) for a slur on race to be relevant. Calling someone a white **** is as bad as calling someone a black ****. It just so happens that there is a far greater history of one of the races being discussed suffering racism. White people not having a history of being enslaved by blacks doesn't mean that being called a white **** by a black person is not racist.

Also, just a thought - is saying something to hurt someone in the heat of an argument still racism, or is it a case of using what you know will hurt them the most to cause the greater pain. For example, racism when I was growing up was picking on someone because of their race (i.e. ****-bashing), however, in this case Terry didn't look to have a go at Anton because he was black, it's just something he used once he got in an argument to cause the greatest upset.

This is spot on. I was racially abused by Bengali youths in East London once when minding my own business, a volley of foul mouthed abuse just on the basis that I am white. My reaction was not to rise to it and therefore not react at all but it still upset me and the main feeling was one of injustice ‘ how dare someone insult me because of my colour’. I assume this is what most victims would say. However make no mistake this is just as bad as if the roles had been reversed regardless of whether one race has been historically more abused than another. Each case has to be judged on its own merits and racism is racism and surely everyone should be treated equally. Its similar to if I go for a job and am the best qualified but don’t get it because the company needs to give it to a woman or a gay person in the interests of diversity, completely unfair regardless of discrimination that has happened in the past. Everyone and that means everyone should be treated completely equally.
Of course history is important, that is why its worse to insult someone because they are black than if they are ginger but it shouldn’t be over exaggerated, I am not entirely sure people think about the slave trade/apartheid when insulting someone in the heat of the moment. As YB says it is completely unnecessary and it really is a low form of abuse but that applies on both sides.

Whilst certain types of people have historically been persecuted and others not, I think the response of regarding current day discrimination/abuse against them as worse than against historically less persecuted groups is only going to create more problems
It leads to the madness of some on the left of developing a hierarchy that allows some groups to be allowed to persecute others eg views on women and homosexuals that would be condemned if practised by westerners are condoned if practised by muslims.
ps On the issue of white people being racially abused/discrminated against, I'm sure that you can if you want to have the non-white offender prosecuted, as I've seen in the media of cases where that has happened.
