The argument about Kane's workrate is a non starter for me really. The club use ProZone data (or, at least, I strongly suspect they do seeing as they were advertising a match analysis internship throughout the close-season) which would monitor a player's movement across the pitch. If Kane really wasn't pulling his weight, I can't see how he'd continually be selected by Sturrock.
He's also in a position where intelligent positional play often makes up for bull-in-a-china-shop nutcasery. It's an extreme example and I'm not comparing the two players for a second, but Michael Carrick's a good example of a "defensive" midfielder who excels without looking industrious. You rarely see him diving into tackles or rampaging after opposing midfielders, because he's safe in the knowledge that he can pick a pass and intercept it before it reaches its destination. I'd be interested to see Ferdinand's interception figures in games he's played a defensive role actually.
This is far too sensible for Shrimperzone. Can the mods please ban this guy for making a reasonable point?
