I want to transfer from VHS tape to DVD.
Would a lap-top have sufficient power to allow me to do this?
I wouldn't want to spend a fortune if a tower system would offer me better options. Reason? About 400 SUFC goals on about 25 VHS tapes!

Thanks chaps (and chappettes).

3-1 tonight!

Depends on the spec of the laptop.

I'm guessing you will need a TV card for the analog input from the video as well.

You'll need a pretty hefty hard disk, about 512k of RAM and a processor rated at least 2gz for a smooth transfer

Oh, and an analogue TV card (you can get these for about fifty quid)

OK thanks - that gives me something to work on.
As for the hard drive, it's not as if I have films to copy, just highlights of a couple of minutes a time.

Now another question - 1 GB of hard drive would store how much video?
Sorry to seem a Luddite but I don't know a great deal about it (It's my age, you know!)

It depends on the quality and frame rate of the conversion as well as what codec is used to record it. At TV standard frame rate under mpeg4 (.mpg file format) it's (roughly) ten megabytes for every minute of film.

Good job it's not Betamax! THe only person who would have been able to help would have been Phil Cox!

My investiagtions reveal 5 minutes per gig of memory including sound, obviously. Does that sound about right?

I assume you meant that 5 mins of video would occupy 1 Gb disk space?
