Lets help Ukraine

Getting the foot in the door to enable us to win contracts going forward no doubt.

What exactly are we offering?

Are we talking about actual aid money or just loans?

George Osborne offered the Ukraine a blank cheque last night to turn the ravaged country around.
The Chancellor said the UK is willing to pour millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money to prop up the new government.
Speaking at a meeting of G20 finance ministers in Australia, Mr Osborne said: ‘We are here ready to help just as soon as there is someone at the end of the telephone.

'We should be there with a chequebook to help the people of Ukraine rebuild their country.’
Last night it was unclear how much cash might be provided but Britain is likely to contribute to stability funds being put together by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.
Since the uprising on Saturday ousted the Russian-backed President Viktor Yanukovych, Ukraine no longer has access to a £9billion handout from Moscow.
Ukraine may need a bailout since it has a dire ‘CCC’ credit rating, but British taxpayers may not take kindly to assisting a country with huge natural resources including oil, whose former president spent millions on a vulgar palace while his people suffered.
IMF boss Christine Lagarde also suggested that Western taxpayers may help Ukraine get back on its feet. She said: ‘If it needs policy advice, financial support and wants to actually undertake a reform of its economy the IMF will help.’
The offers of financial assistance came as the new rulers of Ukraine were last night preparing to arrest ousted President Viktor Yanukovych for corruption and ordering the shooting of unarmed opposition protesters.

Oh, so we're helping them like Wonga "help" people when they are short of money.

Absolutely disgraceful etc etc

With all the flooding etc shouldnt we be diverting that money to the posh people that chose to live by rivers ?

The Government already did that as soon as Berkshire got hit and it started to affect their mates.

One thing is for sure now the Russian Olympics are over they will not just sit still on this issue.

The USA would love them to join the EU so they can stick a military base on Russia's doorstep. I think this has a long way to run yet.

I've no problem with investing in any country as long as it's in our interests. However if the UK, EU or the US think it's a good idea to **** off the Russian bear they just have to look at Georgia and look at the map of Ukraine and just where the Russian fleet is. Crimea all over again. A huge gamble.

It's almost certainly in our interests for Ukraine not to fall into civil war.

If the USA keep on with their current rhetoric of telling Putin to stay out of it...the more they will P*** him off.

Cue: Obama talking about "Hearts and Minds.

and so it begins

Obama only recently wanted to bomb the life out of Assad now he warns Russia.

They are all mad .

Can anyone really see Obama doing anything but sabre rattling. Putin will tip him bollocks all day long and twice on Sundays. This is something we should stay well out of.

We should stay out of it as there is fk all we can do about it.. Let mainland Europe deal with this one. Germany france et al can mobilise in east Germany and tell Putin to do one...we can make a fortune supplying the tanks bullets and spares for a change

The timing of bringing home the BAOR could not have been more at odds with the current events. Our Generals and soldiers have another example of the due diligence of the civil servants and politicians wisdom.:Worthy:

What will be next? Waves of Ukrainian refugees at Calais?

I don't get it!.... why all the surprise over Russia's actions in the Crimea, and why wouldn't they look to protect their interests ..any western state would do exactly the same.. The Falklands anybody?

Ok you don't "get it." Russia is doing what is expected and will get a negligible reply from the West which relies too heavily on it for gas etc. But the West will get some payback from Russian actions with politics elsewhere (e.g.Syria?). Saving face is still very important to the Likes of Putin.
Any comparison with The Falklands is, IMO, too loose and a wholly different set of circumstances and irrelevant.
