Published in a national newspaper. I wonder if Blair's Hate Crime Police are working on the case?

IMMIGRANTS, NOT BRITS MUST ADAPT.

I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on the 7th of the 7th we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Brits. However, the disgust about the attacks had barely settled when the "politically correct" crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others.

I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to Britain, Our population is almost entirely made up of descendants of immigrants. (The Danes, Romans etc.) However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand. This idea of the Brits being a multicultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity.
As Britain's we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This culture has been developed over centuries of struggles, trials, and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom.

We speak ENGLISH, not Indian, Urdu, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the language! "Land of Hope & Glory" is our motto. This is not some Christian, right wing, political slogan.

We adopted this motto because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools.

If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.

If the 'Union Jack' flag offends you, or you don't like our QUEEN, then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet. We are happy with our culture and haven no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from.

This is OUR COUNTRY, our land, and our lifestyle. Our Laws give every citizen the right to express his opinion and we will allow you every opportunity to do so! But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about our flag, our lifestyle our government, or our way of life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great BRITISH freedom, THE RIGHT TO LEAVE.

God, the Union Jack and the Queen offend me. However I am not an immigrant and my family lineage is English for as far back as I am able to trace......so where does that leave me?

And isn't griping about the British government almost a national sport amongst the 'natives'?

Actually Mike, so do I.....and I largely agree with him (just couldn't resist a little 'sh!t-stirring' though).

When I leave these shores to start a new life in Australia I will do so fully acknowledging that I will have to adapt to the customs and way of life of Australia. If I find that impossible to do then I will have only one option...to leave. The same applies to people emigrating to the UK in my opinion.

There are so many people who have emigrated to Spain but have refused to adapt / integrate into the Spanish way of life, choosing to group themselves together in soulless hillside urbanisations, drinking in Brit bars, shopping in (expensive) Brit supermarkets, etc. Some of these people even have the audacity to claim that they left the UK BECAUSE of the perceived flood of IMMIGRANTS who refuse to integrate!! So it's ironic that these are the people that the Spanish really despise; these are the people that can't speak a word of Spanish and therefore can't communicate with their hosts.

Whilst we live a little outside the main town of Jávea, we love to drink in local bars, shop in the (cheap) local supermarkets, use the local shops, speak the local language, observe the local customs (and take advantage of the many, many public holidays!) and generally have a far, far better time than those holed up in the urbanisations.

I could never argue about the immigration and subsequent integration "problem" in the UK if I hadn't have integrated myself into Spanish culture. I can see this fella's point though ...

Unfortunately its only a letter. Although nearly everyone I know is virtually of the same opinion nothing will happen and we will all sit back and watch another school adopt Urdu as their main language and another Muslim temple or whatever they are called spring up at the end of the street and another decent area be ruined by a new camp of Travellers who seem intent on doing anything but travel.
This country has been going down the pan for years and it aint gonna change while His Tonyness is in power.

Thats right Mike at least you make the effort to addapt into another culture thats all I would ask from about wishing to move to the UK

He probably wrote the letter from his Monte Carlo tax haven.

As has been said, the chap could have expressed himself in a better way but I agree with the essence of what he's trying to say. If I ever emigrate, I would expect to have to adapt to the conditions there, rather than impose my own upon them and expect them to humour me.
The trouble is, it's not the immigrants wanting us to change, it's the government and council officials bowing down to imaginary demands from these people, demands which the majority of them are not making....

Any chance of naming the paper this letter appeared in because it appears to have been written by a ten year old.

Perhaps I am not looking hard enough (unlike our letter writing friend) but I have not seen any commentary in the media urging people to be less patriotic for fear of offending our ethinic communities.

That's the bit I don't get.

The history of mankind is that we have constantly evolved. If we had had no desire to change, we'd still be living in an age of servitude, of upstairs/downstairs, of listening to Schubert in our parlours.

We would never have had the Beatles, Punk, the sexual revolution of the 1960s, "greed is good" in the 1980s, the dotcom boom... etc. etc.

I can't imagine a Britain that never embraces change....

That said, I don't disagree with a fair bit of what he's trying to say. I do agree that everyone who comes to live here must learn English. I agree that everyone who lives here (whether an immigrant or not) should work harder at integrating and being part of their local community.

I agree that we should be proud of our history, our quirky customs and our flag - rather than, in the case of the latter, have it expropiated by the hideous racists of the BNP. And I also agree that we should have great faith and energy for our future... one that can include anyone, regardless of race or religion, who wants to work to make Britain a better place.

I'm enjoying reading the letters page in the Scottish Metro every morning this week as some crackpot MSP in the Scottish Socialist Party said that the Saltire should be replaced in favour of a rainbow flag which embraces the diversity of Scotland's population & will allow all immigrants to feel a "sense of identity".

All the indigenous populus are up in arms, funny how it's OK for them to be jingoistic but it's one of the major reasons for them to hate us English (particularly English exiles).
