"Little Red Rooster" was top of the pops; Harold Wilson had just become Prime Minister; the first ever Match of the Day (featuring Phil Chisnall) had just been aired on BBC2 which had itself only just started this year; the death penalty was in the throes of being abolished; Nigel Farage had just been born and Ian Fleming had just died; Radio Caroline had just gone on air. The average weekly wage was £16 and the average house price had just crept above £3,000 (although I'm sure those ones you had to walk between at Luton were going for a lot less!). West Ham were the holders of the FA Cup.
So some good things and some not so good in late 1964 but an unquestionably good thing was our win at Luton, albeit by a solitary Andy Smillie goal - having lost there in the Cup just a fortnight earlier by the same score. Bruce Rioch made his League debut in that match we won.
Sadly, we have not managed to win at Luton since in what is just shy of 50 years.
Some might suspect by now that I have little to say about the referee and they'd be right.
Saturday's referee is newly promoted Chris Kavanagh from Manchester. He is one of four such newly promoted referees. Although he has only done 8 matches at this level this will be his second Southend match having presided over our away draw at Carlisle earlier in the season. Just the one yellow for John White and, I think, not too many complaints. His eight matches have produced a very low 13 yellows and no reds.
He works as the Referees Development Officer for the Manchester FA and refereed one of the Conference play-off matches at the end of last season.
Assisting will be Steven Plane from Worcester and Chris Pollard from Stowmarket with League Referee, Tim Robinson from Bognor Regis keeping an eye on the new ref whilst acting as 4th Official.
