This is good news.

Really? Because I was thinking that 'protecting our investment' by tying players to long contracts on the back of a few decent performances were what almost ran us out of business.

I presume that you have never had a go at Ron Martin for financial mismanagement?

Ridiculous. Will this Club never learn?

But if he walked for free in the summer and ended up going to say a Millwall or a Ipswich type of club then there would equally be people saying "typical Southend, should have sorted him out with a longer deal so we could sell him for a fee!"

Perhaps it's to either put clubs off or perhaps increase his market value.

I very much doubt he is on massive wages coming from a Parisian amateur club, so it's a positive in my book.

He could be a very good player, given the right coaching and game time.

Yeah there would. Tough. Anyone who has had a go at Ron Martin for almost taking us to the wall is a hypocrite if they think that this is a good decision.

One year contracts mean that you lose some good players to bigger club. That's a fact of life for a lower league football club trying to live within it's means. Multi-year contracts are an anchor which very near bankrupted us this summer.

EDIT - hypocrite is abit harsh. Soz. As you can tell, it just annoys me that people can be apparently so willing to see us risk repeating the same mistake as we've just done, whislt at the same time talking about protests and dissatisfaction with life at SUFC.

I'm sure that was the same plan with Alan McCormack, and Adam Barrett, and Francis Laurent.

Maybe.

But Bilel is hardly going to be on a wage anywhere near that trio.

Infact if his new deal is even 1/5th of Barrett's or Macca's I would be shocked and inclined to agree with you.

Completely different situation. we had players on Championship money and were relgated. So we lost the revenue of the Championship and the drop in gates etc. Mohsni is fresh from amatuer ranks so will have been signed on a song and will either improve and serve us well and maybe move on or will go for a fee before his contract is up. How would we have all reacted if Eastwood had gone after his first season?

I think this is a really positive sign of the club starting to build for the future.

Funny how we all see things different - there have been tons of posts on here of people Discussing that all we have is a team of players contracted for a year then we sign one for a longer term and another set of people don't like that either.

yeh think this is a great deal for both parties, southend to stop other clubs pinching this player for next to nothing and great for the player as he has a bit of time to learn and improve at the same time as he wont be on a lot of money over the 1st year of his contract untill he proves himself over the coming months ahead. i am for one pleased as i think he will be a great player that given a year or two will become a much better player and go on to a bigger club and a few quid for southend united.

But the long term contracts we had were on Championship wages which, realisically, is the highest league we will play in in the forseable future. Being favourites to go down, there should have been a relegation clause to cut the wages. This contract should be on league 2 wages which will be much healthier for the club.

Similar to what happened with Laurent though (who wasn't on big wages), let's hope it's a better outcome for all concerned.

It's all relative though. We're on a League Two income now. What happens if we get relegated this season? We'll be playing Conference football with players on League Two money. Laurent was signed on League One money but was still shown the door because we couldn't afford to honour the contract he'd signed.

Have you seen the contract? Do you know there are not relegation clauses?

I see no issue with it if he's on a wage we can afford to pay for the length of his contract.
As others have said this could be a good situation for the club, maybe upping the value of our playing assets too?

What I do have issue with though is how the club are now prepared to fund contract extensions (as well as mentioned elsewhere the foreign scouting missions) and even though the so-called budgetary issues have now been eased thanks to Sainsburys, it's disgusting that certain bills are still outstanding (as well as a lot less control/interference on the playing side of things).

No worries about the edit either, didn't think it was directed at me specifically.

Ok we given a two year deal to a promising young player, who cant be on a fortune. If on the other hand we were going around giving contracts left right and centre with high wages that the club couldnt afford i would be with Beefy on this one, but i dont think thats the case, i think Martins learned his lesson on that one. If we have arrived at the state were we cant give anymore than a years contract to any player no matter how good we might as well pack it in.

Fair point. Past experience would suggest that he's not got such a clause though and I think it's fair enough to assume that he doesn't until we know for a fact otherwise.

The fact that bills are outstanding suggests to me that we are not in the position to be making any long term financial commitments, regardless of whether or not people think we can probably afford it. We could have probably afforded most of the last lot had our income not bottomed-out.
