National Athems

If I see a St George cross flying proudly my chest puffs out with pride. As I flew over the English Channel and saw English soil for the first time in over a year last month I was buzzing with excitement, even at the end of a 24 hour flight. Seeing pictures of the old soldiers laying wreaths in memory of their fallen comrades brings a tear to my eye.

I acknowledge fully the history of our great nation and the sacrifices that have been made for it. I just don't feel any pride manifest itself in our anthem or by the crown or monarchy in any way. Believe me you can be a proud Englishman and anti-monarchist.

I find it interesting that so many people in this country reject and knock the Royal Family and yet the sheer volume of tourism created on their back shows our system to be the envy of the world. Blair,Brown and the loony brigade have spent over a decade attempting to sell our culture/history/traditions down the river, but it ain't happening. Great National Anthem, Great Britain.

I like the German and Russian ones, I think they're the most rousing. I'm living in Germany next year so may get to hear it live.

As for our one, it shouldn't be changed. A national anthem is something sacred and historic. I don't care if some people don't like the music, it's not X-Factor. And it's simple, so the football team can sing it.

Tourism to the UK from abroad has NOTHING to do with the so called (German/Greek)Royal Family or with the National Anthem.Nobody(certainly in the part of Spain that I inhabit has a good word to say for the English or Spanish Royals(also half Greek)and that goes in spades for anyone in the Midi. "Envy of the world?" You must be joking ,surely?

When an American tourist comes to Britain, they want to see Buck House and The Tower of London. When a British tourist goes to America they want to see Mickey Mouse. Says it all really.

Exactly, its about the Architecture and the history, not a brood of out of touch upper class inbreds

How about an Anthem celebrating the wonderful diveristy of this country, Melting Pot by Blue Mink should do it......

Phil, actually which translates as Felipe in Spanish.Carlos is Charles which is what people here call the current heir to the throne. So now you know:)
My point BTW was about how the Spanish Royal family are regarded in Catalonia(and the Basque Country)-and partly in answer to your claim that the British monarchy are "the envy of the world"- how the British Royals are viewed by the majority of Spanish and French citizens.
Basically they couldn't give a Monkey's and nor do I.:soapbox:

Or the Statue Of Liberty, Empire State Building, the White House, Golden Gate Bridge and many other iconic buildings? Or outstanding natural beauty like the Grand Canyon?

Granted for many British tourists who don't venture out of the safety of a package tour it's just Orlando and Disney World but there's much more to see in the great nation of the USA. Just as there's many amazing things to see here in Australia, over the Tasman Sea in New Zealand, all over Europe...in fact anywhere in the world you choose to mention.

London doesn't have the monopoly on great tourist attractions, although it is one of the major world cities. I'm sure it would stil pull in many tourists and retain it's history without a monarch.

Not as many though. Those yankees do love a nice bit of monarchy.

There is that risk of course, however as long as we still had the buildings and pomp and circumstance I reckon they'd still come.

To be honest though I'm not that bothered about the anti-monarchy debate in the UK anymore. I live here and pay taxes over here now so it doesn't directly influence me, however I'll be actively camaigning for the republican vote next time it comes round in Australia. The vote last time was only really lost because there could be no firm agreement on the actual question asked (a big deal in a single issue referendum) and I think it could have a chance of happening if those issues can be resolved.

Was the question Does Ron use Head and Shoulders or Wash & Go ?

Very true. I also had the pleasure of escorting a couple of colonials around the Houses of Parliament yesterday in the company of Bob Spink MP.

Bob Spink = Legend.

When my eldest boy was born he had a letter of congrats sent from the office of the houses of parliament. Due no doubt to my high standing in society. he he he.

Hit with the ladies too, allegedly.
