Post-Match Thread and Ratings Newport County AFC 0 -1 Southend Utd

Big win! I thought we battled well considering the pitch and the conditions. MM made the right call in bringing off halford for akinola...... we then started posing a threat and took a deserved lead! Oxley made decent save at the end to preserve the 3 points. Still gonna be tough to stay up but victory tonight will give the lads confidence going forward.

Wow what a difference a week or so can make. A tough fixture on paper, an awful pitch barely Sunday league standard and against a team in 5th who had only lost Once at home. Was it pretty no, was it a classic no, but just like December, we dug in when it mattered, held firm and got that bit of luck that has deserted us on occasion. First half was very poor from both sides but the second half belonged to us. ANG should have passed to Sim, Sim headed wide, Reeco had 2 shots blocked and we got the deflected goal. They had one chance of note hit wide followed by the late chance saved by the Ox. Unlike the previous 4 games MM got it spot on. We kept it tight first half, frustrated them and after the hardworking Halford went off we hit them with the speed and skill of Akinola . For me it was the introduction of Sim that turned the game.

As for mom, Dieng was excellant as was ANG, Ferguson effective without being outstanding. The defence stood firm and we looked so much better with a back 4. For his goal and solid performance it would be Clifford for me but hard to choose really as it was an all round team performance.

Now on to Saturday, we know we can compete with Cambridge and they got spanked tonight. Would take a draw but no reason why we can't go there with confidence and get another 3 points

What’s all this Oxley made loads of saves? They had one attempt on target, which he did make a very good save. That was it?

Awful pitch but we battled and stayed solid, and when you do that you've always got a chance. Hobson looks a great signing for his age.

Lots of talk of 4/5 at the back, I think the fact that MM has brought in Ferguson, Mellis and kept on Olyinka tells us that he's looking at a 4231 system for the rest of the season. That's a lot of midfield options!

Precisely. There's been a lot of gnashing of teeth about the 5 at the back, and a lot of fans using it as a stick to beat MM with but it's clearly never been his preferred system. He just didn't have enough options in the middle over the past fortnight, we've had so many central midfielders out for one reason or another.

We seem to get much better results when we wear the light blue kit. Need to wear it all the time ( home and away!)

Great result. Terrible first half on a woeful pitch.

The last 30 mins we looked a very useful side.

Potentially we have

Hart
Mellis
Oyalinka
Taylor
Walsh
Egbri
McCormack
Holmes
Simpson
Ranger

all to play a part in the end of the season.

We have every chance to stay up.

He should have stuck with what was working. 5 at the back made is worse than if we stuck to the system the players were comfortable with. But it’s part of learning as a manager which he is doing.

Keep it tight and try and snatch something from a set piece is how you get out of ruts.

That was a big result as heads were in danger of dropping but that's now twice a bad run culminating in a terrible result has produced a reaction and a 1-0 away win.

We're still in a hole though and we desperately need another team to have a collapse. That penultimate game of the season v Barrow could be huge.

I guess it's easy with hindsight. With Olayinka having been nobbled vs Grimsby, the options available made it easier to go with 5-3-2, he wanted to go with two strikers having signed Hackett because we weren't scoring enough. The performance vs Cambridge was decent despite defeat so probably masked things, then Dieng gets sent off vs Mansfield, Macca pulls up and Taylor is already out with the COVID.

Introducing Cordner to the back line seemed to unsettle them, a player intent on playing out from the back, when our defenders had clearly been advised to avoid that. Port Vale was just one of those games that started badly through a bit of bad luck and just got worse and worse.

Last Saturday's postponement may have been one of the best results of the season. The main reason we are where we are is a lack of options all season.
