With us now out of the play-offs and yesterday showing how shallow our squad is, it got me thinking as to where we could end up next season if we don't make the play-offs this year. We've got quite a few players out of contract, a few who are getting older and some who might be angling for a move.

Goalkeepers - If we want to really push for the top of the league then I'm not convinced by Oxley or Smith, but that could be harsh on Oxley given his bad luck with injuries.

Defence - Few concerns here.
1) Coker will probably attract interest from the Championship again, how long will we be able to hold them off for?
2) Ferdinand is only getting older, will he still have it in him to be playing week in, week out by the end of next season?
3) Thompson's contract is up this summer, would hope he will stay but certainly wouldn't be a shock to see a bottom half Championship or top League 1 club make him an offer.
4) White has been crucial whenever we've had injuries, but with his deal up will he be happy to be a reserve choice?

Midfield - Depth needed definitely.
1) Wordsworth and Atkinson's contracts are up but would surely expect them to renew. We have options on Leonard and Timlin.
2) Real lack of depth both in the middle and out wide, we need someone who can come in and replace a McLaughlin style player desperately. Hines has been all but kicked out already and it's no good only having two out and out wingers in the squad. That and having no like for like replacement for Woody has cost us with injuries.

Strikers - Pretty solid here. Keep hold of what we've got, let Mooney and Nouble go, and look to score just as many if not more next season. Keeping Ranger on track could be key as Fortune isn't getting any younger.

Definitely think we have the building blocks in place for a successful campaign next season, especially if we show the kind of intent that we did with some of our signings this season like Cox, Ferdinand, Demetriou, etc. The worry will be if we need to rebuild defensively, even though PB has shown that he can certainly pick a player when it comes to the back four. Provided we can keep hold of our key players and bring in a bit more depth, don't see why we couldn't make ourselves firm contenders for the top six next season, especially given the sides coming down. Rotherham shouldn't be too much of a danger, Wigan could be if financed, Blackburn are in freefall and could depend on the owners.

The only worry I have is that we do have some depth this season, but the players aren't good enough - e.g. Hines, Nouble, Amos, Inniss, O'Neill, Mooney. That's not to say that they're all poor players (some are), but they aren't anywhere near the same quality as the starting eleven. Hopefully, having shown what we can do this season will attract some higher quality players to fill in/replace them next season.

Good points well made. It may even be that another lower end championship club try and approach Brown.

We need to offload:

Atkinson (possibly)
MAF (possibly
O'Niel (highly likely)
Hines (highly likely)
Nouble ( definately )
Mooney (highly likely)
Timlin (unlikely)

We also have players that will need keeping.

Coker
Leonard
Ranger
Wordsworth are all vital to our team and the fact that all four were missing yesterday shows how poor we are without them.

How about we concentrate on this season first !

Some people talk on here as though they are better managers than which ever manager we have at the time and yet, with 4 games left, some players returning and us being a point off the play offs have grown in the towel !

How would this forum explode if PB came out today and said the same ??

Do I think we can do it it, I've no idea, but do I believe in this set of players yes, their run over the last 30 games deserves such respect , so until we can't do it, I'm still believing and supporting that it can be done !

Think you've missed the point. I believe that we can still make the play-offs and possibly even get promoted this season, but whatever happens and wherever we end up we will need to make changes in the summer if we are going to compete, whether that's to survive in the Championship or to challenge for promotion from League 1.

I really felt we failed to replace Worrall. We really lack that type of player and yesterday proved it.
Whichever league we are in net season, we need improvements all over the pitch.

It shows that if you support club with a playing staff budget in the bottom half of L1, then you don't look good with 5 of your first team players out suspended or injured. Plus a 6th (McL) still not back to his best after along term injury.

No need to hit the panic button or give up on the season just yet.

I wonder if he's pleased he made the move to Millwall - can't remember the last time he started a game for them.

Yes it shouldn't be hard to replace Worrall. One goal in about 20 odd games, struggling to get in the team and disliked by nearly all the home fans. We have specialised in that sort of signing over the years.

good post and mirrors the discussion we had on the way home yesterday

whether we are in lge1 or championship will be he deciding factor but regardless we need to look at GK, RB, CB plus CM and LW positions

Lenny, Thomo and Coker are my main concern and critical to next seasons campaign wherever we are, so must be offered serious incentives to stay

Yes it is rather baffling to see. He was on fire at the start of the season for them. Then, like at SUFC, he struggled to start. However, the sentiment stands, we needed a winger like him (on his good days) and it never materialised. I was wrongly optimistic about Hines. Good damn being indonial, mind you, that's the life of a blues fan!

PB will give it one more crack I would suspect. Next season is going to be wide open if we don't go up. No real standout teams.

Let Mooney, Nouble, Hines, O'Neill and maybe Atkinson go. Amos to return to Tottenham.

Would need a striker, two wingers, central midfielder and a versatile defender I think. However, we do have options in youth there for cover in Kyprianou and Bridge.

He started for them yesterday...

Thanks for that - was away and didn't see yesterday's line-up but that must have been his first start for quite a while. Whenever I've checked before he's been an unused sub. I see NH wants to sign Wallace permanently in the summer so don't think he'll get many games there next season either.

To be fair to Hines he hasn't really had any opportunity to show his worth, the few minutes I witnessed him play he seems quick, and skillful but lacked the ability to cross or pick out a team mate - whether this was lack of match time or ability I cannot be sure?

come next season i reckon he'll be gone along with Nouble, as they were just stop gaps...

Let Atkinson go?? Are you guys serious??
Outstanding player to have in the squad, gives his all every game, he breaks up play so often it's unreal, pops up with a few goals too. I would be gutted to see him go.

If woody is out of contract then we have no chance of competing with likely suitors from championship who would love a goal scoring midfielder!
